Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to acquire Alchemy Semiconductor Inc. and pit that company's MIPS-based processor architecture against Intel Corp.'s Xscale processors, broadening an already fierce rivalry to the embedded front, sources said.

For those that didn't already know...

MIPS is a RISC (reduced instruction set computer) type of microprocessor (like the PowerPC). I believe Silicon Graph was the company that developed it. Not 100% sure though...

Makes sense to me. Embedded processors are so prolific that they represent a nice steady stream of income, provided that ASP's don't go the way of flash...

I thought Alchemy was stated by guys who use to work for DEC not MIPS? After Intel bought Alpha last year I figured AMD would grabbed one of the other RISC chip makers since the Athlon is built using a lot of licensed Alpha technology.

Good question. It's sorta confusing to me.
