AMD to be used in Xbox!.. Yep, at least maybe.

I doubt it for several reasons.

1) its probably too late in the development stage to change CPUs
2) HyperTransport is too new to be and unproven so I doubt it will be used. Again, it is probably too late to incorporate it.

But then again, who I am to say anything? I guess we'll just have to see. Using AMD will be wiser for MS since they'll save money and 733mhz Athlons dont produce that much heat.

I thought HyperTransport was just a renamed LDT (Lightning Data Transport) so it's not new new, just renamed new

So who thinks the cpu will be socketed? or will they solder it to the board?

I think that Microsoft has time to put the processors in the systems, the systems are not actually built yet, they have been waiting on the chips from Nivida so it's very possible that they could put an AMD chip in the system too.

Maybe they are waiting for that Nvidia chipset that's for AMD cpus.the Mambo i think it was called, the one with 3 megs inside the chipset.:)

Holy sh!t, they're still monkeying with the hardware? MS better get its arse in gear if it plans to seriously compete with the GameCube.

You know how consoles are sold at cost, and revenues made up through software sales? I wonder if it would be advantagious to hack apart the x-box for parts?

Unfortunately, the console will probably not be hackable. Everything will most likely be soldered onto a single PCB. Plus, I'm sure everything will have proprietary connections:(

Madthumbs:

Consoles are usually sold for a loss (PS2 anyone?) and I'm sure XBox will easily fit into that category.

You can probably still hack the X-box and install non-sanctioned software (omg Linux :Q) or heaven forbid make "unauthorized" copies of games...

I want to be 133t and rice it out with a bigger HDD, more ram, and a faster cpu (plus some yellow stickers) ;)

Pure speculation, at best. The author obviously doesn't even know that AMD does not produce a 733MHz part.

MSFT will not be backing out of their contract with Intel. At best, AMD could get a secondary supplier status, but I guess people are forgetting Jerry Sanders words : "We won't sell our chips THAT cheap ..."

Also, it's amusing that the AMD lollies make a big deal out of HyperTransport, but totally pan the Intel NetBurst architecture. Both = marketing hype.

How would they ever cool down the amd system though? Well, maybe like laptop systems, they can just use a version like in the laptops, they arent as hot as the ones in the desktops. Or maybe they will get the pure silicon or whatever, so it's much cooler

Hm yes why bother cooling, with a few modifications they could sell the xbox as an easy bake oven:p

laptops use heat spreaders and other things.. eh why bother when intels chips run cool

It wouldn't be tough for AMD to produce a 733Mhz chip, they just need a 5.5 multiplier. I'm starting to think this may be possible, on the offical Xbox site it no longer says "733Mhz Intel," but just 733Mhz. They could probably get a mobile Duron 733 to run at 1.4 volts or so, that wouldn't be too hot of a chip. Plus I'm sure by the time they actually start mass-producing, the Palomino core will be available. Unlikely, but it is possible.

Actually, if you've read up on LDT (or HT as it's called now), you would know that it isn't merely marketing hype. There are many confirmed users of the bus already (INCLUDING NVidia, it has been confirmed from multiple sources over a good deal of time, that they will be using it for the Xbox hardware), and a great deal of others are currently investigating using it.

However, one interesting comment by an AMD PR guy is that, the volume of chips that MS would require to have an AMD CPU in the Xbox, is so large that they would effectively have to stop creating chips for the PC market to create them for the XBox. Intel has so much more capacity that this isn't a problem for them.

actually, i read in a maximum pc magazine article that microsoft f*cked over AMD. they made plans to include AMD based processors, and then after AMD had spent 6 months (could be +/-, don't remember exactly right now) in R&D - just cut them out. Pretty unethical if you ask me - although with their past relationship with Intel - not surprising.

"733 mhz that's a darn fast CPU for a console system."

Don't make me laugh. :p The x86 architecture is getting to be a ripe, old, rotten, sickly age. I can't believe they put one in a console.
