Hello,

1. I am upgrading my computer and I need some advice. So far, I see two configurations:
CPU: Intel 2.8C Ghz
MB: Asus P4P800-E Delux
RAM: 512MB

CPU: AMD A64 3000+
MB: Asus K8V Delux
RAM: 512MB

How is the perfomance between the two? Which one should I get? The system from AMD is about 35 CAD cheaper. Besides the CPU and the MB listed above, what else do you recommend?

2. I am also going to buy 2 SATA HD and put them in RAID 0. Is it possible to have the Serial RAID AND some PATA HD drives on the same MotherBoard (basically, I want to re-use the old harddrives for back up purposes)?

3. I want to re-use the Radeon DDR 32MB Video Card. Is it compatiable with these Motherboards?

4. With the system above, can I re-use my power supply (300W)?

Thanks!

1. The second option would probably perform better.

2. Yes

3. Yes, though I would look into upgrading it.

4. Consider me skeptical. I would at least get a quality 350W though.

I noticed how Xbit Labs, TomsHardware and several other hardware reviewing sites gave the AMD64 3000+ different benchmarks results as compared to the other AMD64's, XP's, and P4's. TomsHardware shows that the P4 dominates in almost every aspect, while Xbit (and other sites) show the AMD64 3000+ even the P4 3.0 Ghz 800 FSB processor. Does anyone know why there is such a disparity in each reviewer's results? I'm actually trying to decide which CPU to get, AMD64 3000+ (with low probability of future upgrade because of socket change) or Intel P4 3.0 Ghz 800 FSB (which current mobo's will support the Prescott cpu's).

I heard Tom smokes crack.

I don't think there are discrepancies other than that. When the CPUs are tested in games that don't put the workload on the processor (DX9) everything is pretty much equal on the higher end processors because the vid card is doing the work. As always Intel comes out on top in encoding and Amd is the winner in business/content creation. Benches such as as Aquamark will put some of the weight on the cpu. Older games will do the same. The moral of the story is if your building a gaming system for next generation/ DX9 games your cpu isn't going to matter a whole lot so buy a vid card. If your building it for encoding go Intel and general usage/ content creation
go with AMD.
