AMD System for a friend...WHICH CORE?

Which core would be the best for my friend...all are about the same price for the 3500+ AMD 64. He plays games which are CPU intensive and is going to college.

Clawhammer
Venice
San Diego (1GHz FSB on this one I believe)
Winchester

No overclocking.

THANKS!

I'd go with the San Diego. Can't really explain why. It's got 1MB of cache, and it's better than the Clawhammer.

Thanks for the SUPER QUICK reply!

I was also contemplating the 4200X2 as well. That's got the Manchester.

What's he willing to spend? If you want to go dualcore, I'd go with the 4400+, since that has 1MB of cache per core, just like San Diego.

Oh, and, you're welcome 🙂. I've got nothing better to do 😛.

I agree the only place the 1mb of cache actually delivers is in games....

venice or san diego for single core, the dual core cpus use the venice and san diego core they just called it something else for some reason. Lower power consumption on the venice and san diego cores, plus sse3 instructions.

What kind of price range does he have? If he is willing to spend a bit more, the 4400+ is an excellent chip. For a little less, the San Diego 3700+ is a great chip. If you want "bang for your buck", a 3000+ venice should be a great buy if you OC. Those chips can reach 2.7 GHz (2.5 for sure).

Looks like the 3700+ San Diego will the good choice. I'll get a board that's upgradable in the future just in case as well. He gave me a max of $1800 including LCD, KB and Mouse. I have a few things in mind for him at the moment so I'll see how the pricing is going once I choose an LCD and whatnot for him.

Well 1800 is enough to get an X2 in there but in gaming would not offer anything more...if he isn't going to multitask or run SMT apps like video encoding or 3D CAD he wont see it....Better spending the money on ram, best vid card, and nicest LCD monitor with HD cpacity

Definitely the SD 3700+ and you'll be able to get a nice video card and a nice LCD with the money you save over the 4400+.

buy 2.0 Mhz get 500 free...Please dont pass up the free safe overclocking option.
