If so (and I see no reason to be skeptical) that's brutal. God forbid we should be able to purchase inexpensive CPUs that give value for money. Especially since Intel always kicks their A$$es in terms of price, thereby giving the illusion of value. Why cancel the 3500?

Not only that, why put out the 939 Opterons out at all in the first place? That really sucks. I was thinking about getting one.

It continues a trend mentioned on this Web site where you can't expect high-end components like the 6800 Ultra to just drop in price. No, they have to discontinue it when they're still charging $500+ for that thing, and forcing value buyers to look at spending $200+ for a POS new-generation card like the 6600 or the 6200 that doesn't even come close to the 6800U.

I'm frankly starting to hate the PC industry. The AMD chipsets suck crap, while their CPUs rule. Meanwhile the Intel CPUs suck while their chipsets rule.

(Off soapbox now, I'm cranky because my AMD system lunched its XP installation and I had to reinstall - again. I'm not very happy with the stability of my AMD system, even though I can run fvcking Prime all day long.)

what did i read right? stop production on 3200+ and 3500+?? They only just stopped production on 3000+. AMD needs a Athlon 939 processor under $150 now and in the future...

Arent those skus just semprons and winchesters? I dont think venice or san diego cores are getting cancelled for those speed grades.

Ahh correction, they are stopping E3 steppings, the good overclockers

Although ive heard the E4s are doing better than the E6s did. The E6s didnt OC as well as the older E3s.

Why release a new chip and then cancel it shortly after?? (Marketing)
Why phase out socket 939 in favor for 940 Pin M2?? (WOW 1 PIN)?
Why make the move to DDR2?? (if its not broke, dont fix it!)
Why phase out a perfectly good series of procs (that I consider NEW!)

Because DDR2 is already cheaper. Because they cant just swap a mobo chip with a new memory controller like Intel can, but they have to rework the IMC on each DIE, so better do it sooner than later in a hurry (quad cores will need the extra bandwith, I'm pretty sure).

I see no reason to not upgrade to a S939 box now instead of waiting for M2, but there are many good reasons for AMD to go DDR2 and DDR3 in the future.

that article is pretty misleading...they are just cancelling the E3 and E6 steppings right? the E4 3200 and 3500 will still be there...

wait wait....didn't AMD JUST announce like 5 months ago that 939 was going to be the path they went down for the forseeable future? That's why I got a 939 3500+, so that if i wanted to jump to a next gen. processor I could stick wtih the same mobo, assuming compatability of the mobo was still there

they always do keep some parts avaiable on the socket, not neccesarily good ones however

i had a socket A motherboard , for 1400 T-Bird, looking for future
had to update motherboard when going to 2500+ Barton, cuz the motherboard couldnt hand FSB speeds that high, also looking to the future with socket A
then comes this year, ready to upgrade.. whats left on socket A? Overpriced Athlon XP CPU's because of low availability, or Semprons..
So I went to 939, not 754 cuz its already going out
