AMD stock heatsink thermal compound question

Hi

I purchased a retail AMD 64 3200+ that comes with an AMD HS/fan. It looks to me like there is a thermal pad on the HS (a square the size of the cpu) but the instructions say:

"thermal interface material is required for all AMD processors. Use only the recommended thermal interface material for this processor (see Thermal Cooling Guideline on AMD's website for a complete list of approved material for the specific processor you're using"

Do I need to use a thermal compound in addition? Can anyone confirm that that is a thermal pad and not just a surface of some kind? Thanks in advance for any help.

No, you don't need to add anything. Mine is working fine with the grey thermal pad that was stuck on the HSF.

Its Shin-etsu T.I.M. and unlike the old days of stock T.I.M.s, good stuff, so no worries.

I doubt AMD would ship a retail package with a thermal interface material that doesn't meet their own spec for non-o/c operation. It's their choice of materials and they have to support the three year warranty to back it up.
