Quite surprising. Now if only NVIDIA would give us something that's comparable to the 3rd party coolers.
Wow. When I got my 165 I took a second look at the HS and was thinking there was no way AMD included this. Guess I was wrong.
Still not going to take out my XP-90 though.

The review was done by lazyman not jmke. Read the comments in the madshrimps forum linked at the end of the review.
jmke says for the test to be fair the AMD's 80x20 fan was used on the XP-90. True the XP-90 comes with clips to fit an 80mm fan but retail it comes with a proper 92mm fan.
By using an 80 on the XP-90, air is out of direct reach of it's heat pipes and on the AMD sink the pipes are closer to center. Not even-steven in my mind.
At the very least an adapter 80 to 92 should have been used up-side down on the XP so the AMD's fan could have serviced the XP properly. Or using the same 92mm fan on both with the AMD sink getting the benefit of a fan adapter.

I agree with galvanized here, it's not fair as he didn't do the test with a 92mm fan on the XP-90.

i'm shocked, i was going to get a Zalman CNPS9500 or 7000, but now i might just stick with the stock HSF.

If I had this HS CPU combo the first thing I'd do would be to put an 80 to 92 adapter on it,
then use a 92mm fan of 40cfm(atleast) on it. The stock 80x20 rips at 12V. That's the main complaint many have posted here.

I personally have tried both and to my surprise they are pretty much equal in performance. Just that the stock AMD hsf is a tad bit louder that my xp-90 w/ L1B spinning at 1300rpm. The stock AMD hsf runs @ +/- 2700rpms idle is 32c, load 40c with it and this oc.

3800+'s come with the standard single core AMD 64 aluminum heatsink
I personally can vouch for that. I was disappointed.
It looks like a review of the stock plus 2x40mm. Maybe I'm seeing things, but looking at the pictures of the two setups on page 2, the 40mm fans are on different places on the motherboard, they're blowing in different directions (1 up, the other down) and it looks like the 80mm is different too (I see the label on one picture, but not the other).
Well after reading this thread and the review, I was intrigued. Since people pointed out the guy didnt use a 92mm fan with the panaflo, I decided to benchmark it myself. I happen to have the same opty 165 cooler. I actually bought the retail box then sold the cpu but kept the heatsink.
So I decided to take some time and uninstall my xp-90 w/ 2500rpm 92mm panaflo and install the brand new stock opty heatsink. I run an opteron 144 CACJE oc'd to 2.6ghz w/ 1.425 volts. Similar to what the reviewer on the site had.
Well I have to say, I am definitely amazed.......
Temps with XP-90 w/ 92mm panaflo at 2500rpm(which is fairly loud with that high of cfm):
34C idle
42C load
Temps with the stock 165 copper heatpipe heatsink:
33C idle
41C load
My temps dropped by 1C for both idle and load with the stock heatsink! I was blown away that a stock cooler I got for FREE, performed pretty much the same, even slightly better than a cooler I paid $35 for? Wow....im not sure what to say. I definitely wasnt expecting it to perform that well. I am actually debating selling my xp-90 right now since the fan on the stock cooler is actually quieter than my 92mm fan for my xp-90.

@dlerious: the fans were placed over RAM and also over PWM area, pictures were taken for illustration and might not reflect the exact status of the setup at all times. check the setup details; those were used for all temperature tests.
there are a lot of people with digicams who have this cooler, give them a nudge
with a bit of luck I might be getting my mittens on this stock HSF soon also, and pictures will be included in my next HSF reviews
I have received Thermalright HR-01 and Thermaltake Big Typhoon
only downside with HR-01 is no fan mounting clips, so will have to improvise
@modempower: thanks for those test, they look realistic; the 92MM fan on the XP-90 might be able to push more air, but also has larger dead spot in the middle, so you don't actually WIN much in performance. The area where 92MM takes upper hand is dBA.
the 92mm will have a lower dBA to CFM ratio.

Yeah I was very pleased when I opened up my 4600 and saw this in there. It is extremely quiet, especially compared with the Stock HSF I had on my 3500.
Interesting article. AMD just changed pricing so people would buy the X2 more for gaming and OCing than the Optys and now they put a hsf on there that make the Optys more desirable for OCing. I imagine though that they'll do the same for the X2 eventually. AM2 chips should have a nice hsf as well I imagine once it goes into production. I wonder how the 3rd party hsf manufacturers feel about this latest change?

jmke, having participated in the writing of several automotive books, I know about the
conflict of writer vs editor. Sometimes you just have to go with the pics at hand. It's a
real pain when the pics don't match the text, you did not do that jmke. You run a good site.
Skott, as the review stated at it's conclusion...It's about time Intel gets off it's rich rump and
provides the same performance for the toaster CPUs it offers(Intel user here).

heatpipe HS prices fall, this will all be good for the end user.
What might happen? The third party HS providers will(hopefully) develope better heat transfering
fluids and wicking to use inside the pipes, plus more use of copper. HSs have reached their upper
limit for size, I hope
For the rich or those seeking bragging rights...Silver HS might come over the horizon. I for one, would not
be suprised.
All the above is about air cooling. The water cooling folks do have silver water blocks already avalible.
