AMD speeds vs Intel speeds

I'm looking at getting a laptop and saw one with the following CPU/RAM:

2.00 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3300+
512MB 333MHz DDR (upgradable to 2GB)

What would that compare to on the Intel side of things? Is the Sempron like a Celeron M? Maybe a Core Duo? I don't know how they compare these days and want to compare apples to apples instead of to watermelon.

semprons don't really compare to Core Duos (or Core 2s). Semprons are the low-end single core solutions for AMD, while core duo (and now core 2) is intel's high-end dual core mobile solution.

celeron is probably the right comparison to make, but i don't really know what the bottom of Intel's mobile lineup looks like right now. I would guess that that sempron 3300+ should give you performance roughly equal to a 3.0 or 3.2 ghz P4, but i don't have the numbers memorized or anything, so please don't quote me on that...
 
It definitely wouldnt compare to a 3.0 GHz P4, maybe a 3.0GHz celeron...

I would say that it is roughly comparable to a Celeron M at 2.0 GHz... maybe less maybe more

Unless you are really budget limited, i would recommend that you try to get a pentium M at least, and core duo if you can
 
Semprons, as far as I know, are the budget AMD line, much like Intel's Celeron line.

Basically, stay away from them unless you're looking for a cheap computer and don't plan on doing anything fancy with it. If you want a better deal, look for a decent AMD Turion, Intel Pentium M, or Core Duo. The latter will give you more performance.

But it would to a 3 GHz P4-M...remember that the P4-Ms aren't anywhere near as fast as the desktop P4s...

Edit...actually, it blows WAY past all of the Celerons.
 
Yeah. I guess I'll wait until BF and see what laptop deals come out. Wife wants one to replace her desktop so the faster the better but we have about a $600 budget so we'll see what happens.

the Pentium Ms are a lot better than the desktop P4s. they aren't clocked nearly as high, but they are MUCH more efficient. Pentium Ms formed the basis for the for the Core microarchitechture, with is quite a bit better than netburst...

Pentium M is not a P4-M...
Many are confused by this, the P4-M is a P4 mobile part based on Netburst...the Pentium-M is a different architecture.

I have a Sempron 2500 desktop with 1GB RAM. XP runs slow from the time it is installed. It is slow for anything and everything. Never buy a sempron.

Ummmm...
1. Is that a socket A Sempron (2 generations back)
2. Slow compared to what (It's faster than the Celerons for example)?
3. How much troubleshooting have you done on the rest of your system? CPUs are not the only thing that can slow down a system...

Edit: I have run MANY Sempron systems, and they have all been just fine...
