You do not need more than 750W.
That's what I use for an O/C i7 980 and an O/C 290X with more than 200W margin (Antec TruPower 750 from 2010).
Either you have a multi-rail PSU with badly allocated rails (try changing the PCI plugs used, or your PSU has a default.

Or the problem is something else.

thanks, i'll take a look. The latest catalyst driver (14.12) works fine for u?

how do i tell i've got bad allocated rails. Are there any tangible stuff i should be able to spot? Other than changing the plugs

You should find a sticker on your PSU telling you which rail can give which number of ampers.
If you have your CPU and both CPU plugs on the same rail on on two rails PSU, It could be a problem (that's just an example, I do not know your PSU).

I use the 14.12 without any troubles so far, but I've never actually had much trouble with this card. Just had a few BSOD on random in the beginning, solved by BIOS update.

edit : can't believe I've had it for 18 month already ! First time I keep a card so long since ... probably my 9800pro !
