There was a picture of socket M2 floating around about 4-5 months ago (so this is not really news). It was recently renamed to socket AM2 for some reason.

I know that AMD would be the only one to give it an official name. But this is a very recent article that maybe points to AMD renaming it back to socket M2...

Yes. They released that board while the socket was rumored to be called M2. AMD changed the name to AM2 after the board was released. AM2 will still work fine on the board though.

Most definately looks like other sockets with lots and lots of holes, but it is exciting cause that will be me next socket upgrade in all likelyhood.

(Im thinking M2 X2 @ 3.4, r600, WGF 2.0/DX10, 2gb ddr2 @ 800mhz, vista + cablecard HD Tuner + HDDVD + 3007fpw(Im a single GPU kinda guy)

Sorry for the off-topicness but I like to daydream sometimes.

I'm pretty sure this is just the same picture that was floating around last year, before AMD was said to be changing the name to AM2. Must have been a slow day at the rumor mill...

Wasn't M2/AM2 supposed to be an LGA type design like Intel's 775? I thought that I remembered reading something like that.

You're thinking of Socket F (the upcoming 1207 pin server socket)
