Just a thought here ...

There was a post earlier this week stating that AMD will slash their CPU prices by as much as 50%, acording to TheRegister, efective on Oct 9. Now I look at Anandtech's WebNews and see that all thunderbirds under 900mhz will be discontinued.

So will prices for these processores fall even more after AMD stops manufacturing them, or will the prices climb, due to less chips on the market?

Less chips wont be on the market. All of those chips they were using to make the lesser MHZ parts will instead be put to use by making 900+ mhz parts.

So the same amount of chips will be out there, just at a higher mhz.

I was refering to less sub-900mhz chips on the market. For some system builders, having an "intermediate" CPU (i.e. 750-800mhz) is good idea.

Goddamit, 1 out of 10 replies to my posts has something regarding my nick. But since I'm Brazilian, I don't give it a duck ;) ;)

And please: Just stay on the topic!

Well, it was okay as long as I only saw the name in the handle, but when I saw it in the sig, in bold no less, it was getting hard to keep cool. John's answer was just too much ROTFLMAO :) I apologise, it's not fair to you kuk. What does it mean in Portugese then?

edit: the subject yes, hrmm-usually after a processor is discontinued the price for that part becomes rather stagnant. Now the price for an athlon 550, 600 and 650 (if you can get them) is pretty much the same as for the 700.

Isn't the Duron a thunderbird but with a limited cache?
I was thinking that they turn bad thunderbirds into durons like Intel might do.

If AMD is getting great yields at higher speeds then there's no reason for them to keep selling slower parts, which of course just turn out to be faster parts clocked down.

Bakwetu: WTF ?! You are one of the rare people that actually knows that Brazilians speak Portuguese, and not Spanish or "Brazilian" :Q (/me remembering a commentary made by the Stigmata's movie director). Congrats !

Kuk is nonsense in Portuguese ... actually "K" is not an official letter. Kuk is an IRC name I adopted after someone typed up wrong my lastname. Seemed nice to me (pronounciation is quick, easy and resembles "Cookie") ;)

Back to the topic ... I see your point, but I think that for a short period of time, the prices might rise just a bit, due to lack of parts, although I don't really know if it'll be a big impact.
