If Intel shuts out VIA from making chipsets for the P4 then AMD should make a big move to acquire VIA. If AMD acquires VIA, then they will be in an even better position to lay some smack down on Intel. I am sure that if VIA was part of AMD, they would make even better chipsets than they currently make...

You know what else would happen?
I would be smiling even more as I am a proud AMD stockholder :p

VIA is not that small a company. They are owned by the formosa plastics conglomerate, that also owns, FIC and Nanya. The formosa plastics company is probably worth as much as AMD and i doubt they'd sell VIA

Via is owned by S3 - and S3 is as big or bigger than AMD, so unless they wanna merge, that ain't gonna happen.

But I could be wrong.

Mister T: No sh!t, if AMD acquires VIA, we Intel users will have no choices beside Intel chipsets because VIA will not be able to produce competitive chipsets like AppoloPro 133A. Intel will also become the monopoly to Intel based motherboards. Totally sucks, I reject this idea.

LXi- looks like your stuck with Intel chipsets in the near future- Intel is refusing to license the Williamette chipset!

I am of the OPINION that Intel is trying to make up some profit with the "Williamette chipset" that is not coming from CPU sells!

I like competition. Ex. AMD vs Intel; VIA vs Intel; Cyrix vs Suck.

S3 does not own Via Trinitron.

S3 and Via are two completely separate entities. S3 sold their graphics sub-division to Via. That's just one part of the company, S3 and Via are still separate companies.

But as someone pointed out, Via is owned by Formosa Plastics and they are huge company, they won't sell Via it's still profitable.

If intel disallows Via to make P4 chipsets, perhaps there will be some sort of Alliance or Merger between AMD and Via, but I don't think AMD buying Via is very likely, FPC has enough money to make that unlikely.
