I'm planning on building a small web server using a tyan Transport GT20 (B2865)barebone.

It supports a single socket 939 processor. I plan on using Crucial Unbuffered ECC DDR400 memory.

I was originally looking at the opteron 165 as a processor. Server, Opteron ok. But for the same price i can get an athlon X2 4200+. 400MHz faster and half the cache. They both support Unbuffered ECC memory. Is there something I'm missing here. I know opterons are higher grade silicon, but will it make a difference, my 3700+ is flawless and so is any other athlon i've ever seen.

If you don't plan on overclocking just get the X2. If you do plan on overclocking, you want the 165. Can we make this a freakin' sticky? ;)

everyone always recommends the 165. if u have the extra money, do yourself a favor and get the 170, the 10x multipler will be great if your using DDR400 sticks.

For a small web server, an X2 3800+ should be good enough (at stock speed) unless you're expecting 100,000+ hits a day on a database/content system driven site.
