Seems to me to be a good deal for a cheap crunching combo
AMD Sempron Processor 3100+
& ECS NFORCE3-A Motherboard
AMD:

High-performance Hyper Transport CPU interface

* 754-pin CPU has Enhanced Virus Protection
* NVIDIA nForce3 250 Single Chipset
* AGP8x/4x
* 5 PCI Slots
* DDR400
* SATA/RAID 0/1/0+1
* 6 Channel Audio
* 10/100 LAN RJ45

Thanks! I was looking for a cheap combo to upgrade my kids' old PIII-550. Everything else in the system is usable, and I wanted something with AGP since their Radeon 7000 was plenty for Thomas the Tank Engine and Dora the Explorer. It will make a nice folder too...

I didn't pick up this combo, but I do have a Sempron 3100+ (Palermo 90nm) core and a Epox 754 NF3 board. The Sempron is currently running nice and cool at 2.55Ghz.

There's a huge thread in Hot Deals about this same combo, and I think the Semprons in the combo are Paris cores (130nm). They might run a tad bit hotter than the Paris chips, but they are still great OC'ers. (should hit 2.3 - 2.4 easy).

Thanks for the heads up!

That's a very nice deal! I bought a Sempron 2600+ and a Biostar K8NHA Grand motherboard for $110 near the end of last year and that was a really good deal at the time. This one is even better. 🙂

As far as what speeds the combo could reach, that's a really hard question to answer since every motherboard, CPU, and RAM (even of the same brand and model) have different capabilities when overclocking. However, as Hurricane Andrew said, 2.3-2.4GHz shouldn't be a problem at all, and you could go higher than that if you get a good chip.

From the thread in HD, many are reporting that the max HTT/FSB in the BIOS of the ECS board is 250. Since the multiplier on the 3100+ is 9x, hitting 250x9=2.25Ghz should be easy for the Semprons.

Even though the BIOS is limited to 250, you can still use a program like Clockgen to further increase the FSB within Windows. Several have reported being able to hit 280-290 on the HTT/FSB, and that puts you in the range of 2.5-2.6Ghz.
