Hi there fry's electronics has a sempron 2400 with motherboard for 64.99
here's the link

or i can get a pentium 4 2.4A with 533 mhz bus with motherboard for 124.99
here's the link

i'm putting together a system for my parents and all they do if view a few pictures on the interenet email and general word, office type programs this system will not play games at all they wanted to buy a dell and i talked them out of it to let me build them a budget computer so i have narrowed it down to these two combo's
or i could buy a new motherboard to use with my old athlon xp 1600 that i have.
which is faster a pent 4 2.4A or a sempron 2400?

The pentium is certainly faster, but for what they are doing I doubt there will be any noticeable difference. might as well go with whatever is cheapest, IMHO.

ditto

Id go sempron for the price, they wont be doing any 3d gaming so itd run great.

If it were for gaming id reccomend the P4 because you can OC that thing like crazy.

how much of a OC can that processor do? a 400 to 600 mhz Oc is that feasible? i know that the motherboard that is supplied is not the greatest but for 124 bucks is pretty cheap most likely i'll just go with the sempron due to the fact that its on 65 bucks for both but i'm still undecided

Both of those combo's have been out of stock for a while, hence it says:
"call for availability"

So i don't think either of those will work out for you, but if they ever come back in stock, get the sempron combo, i got that one a while ago, and the ECS KT600A motherboard it comes with is actually very nice. 🙂

Do that, just buy a cheap Socket A motherboard. It will be more than enough for their needs. Enough RAM and a fast hardrive would be more emportant than the CPU speed.

i have 512 megs ddr2100 and a ata 66 or 100 20 gig HD i am taking there old HD out of there comcrap computer
