Any big differences in performance? At a glance I see that the Athlon 64's have 512 L2 cache vs the Sempron's 256

For instance, I can buy the 64 Sempron 3400+ Palermo 800mhz FSB socket 754 for 123 or
the 64 Athlon 3000+ Newcastle 800mhz FSB socket 754 for 125 on newegg

I'm looking at 754 slot due to having a spare 754 mobo I just got back from RMA from gigabyte the G8NS Pro if anyone cares.

Thanks for any info to help. :)

The Newcastles are 130nm process and thus may not OC as high plus will run hotter. Why not go $126 and get the best of both worlds? That price at Newegg will get you a Venice core Athlon 64 socket 754. You get the larger cache plus the 90nm process.

I would go with the Venice also.
I have a Sempron 2800 OC'd to 2 GHz and it is pretty nice.

Sempron 64's are pretty good for gaming... Do generally take some 200 - 300MHz into account when comparing to Athlon 64's... E.g. Sempy @ 2.4 - 2.5GHz is roughly equal to a Athlon 64 3500+...

Venice on S754?

EDIT: D*mn you guys are right... The Venice would be the obvious choice then... :)

Yup, Venice for $1 more than Newcastle, or $3 more than the same MHz Sempron. A no brainer. If you have a decent AGP video card you can toss one of these on a $55 Nforce3 motherboard, overclock it to 2.5GHz and get really good value out of it.
