AMD Sempron 64 2800+ vs 2500+ XP @ 2.4gHz

I have the opportunity to change motherboards and use the Sempron CPU in the title. With my 2500+ XP at 2.4gHz what processor would you recommend regardless of the other hardware in the system. This is just a processor comparison and I don't know what is better. Thanks.

A Skt. 754 Sempron will blow away any Athlon XP, including one that's running at 2.5 Ghz, especially if it's overclocked. The 2800's average around 2.4 Ghz, but will go higher on good boards.

I'm by no means an extreme overclocker, but I comfortably ran a Sempron 2800 at 2320 MHz (290 MHz x 8) on an Abit NF7-V (nForce3 250 board). I was very impressed with the performance of this inexpensive chip and, if paried with an nForce3 or nForce4 chipset, will perform great for you. It will absolutely best your overclocked Athlon XP 2500.

I do want to ask, do you already have the chip or is it going to be free to you? If not, there are some other inexpensive options to consider. You can get a socket 939 Athlon 64 (single core) cheap these days and still use your PC3200 DDR. What do you have already?

A skt754 sempron or A64 would only need about 2 ghz to beat a 2.4 ghz AXP. Considering that the sempron migh OC above 2 ghz, I'd say go for it.

Minot poses some great questions to help us make more informed suggestions. Let me add more - What socket 754 motherboard? Are you going PCI-E?

I went from an Athlon XP running at 2.2 GHz to the system in my sig, and the speed increase was major.

However, I recently bought another Sempron 2800 for work, and could only get it to 2.1 Ghz. I was using a real cheap motherboard, and I'm pretty sure the motherboard was holding it back. Just be aware that you may not be able to overclock the Sempron really high - it may depend on your motherboard. Even at 2.0 Ghz, the sempron will be faster. I;m guessing at stock speed (1.6 Ghz) it will be about a tie.
