The Sunnyvale, Calif., chip maker sent a letter to some of its partners stating that several of its desktop processor models were in high demand and would continue to be difficult to obtain, said two systems builder who asked to remain anonymous. One of those systems builder said the note specified the Athlon 64 3500, 3800, the dual-core X2 3800 as well as the lower end Sempron 2600 and 2800 as being in tight supply.

If only they would stop producing the older slower stuff and focus on the newer faster stuff this would not happen.

Do they really need Sempron and Turion and Athlon 64 for mobile segment ?

They should have also moved to 939 and dropped 754 a year ago. Is 939 much more expensive then 754 to produce ?

It seems the executives are delusional and think they can go toe to toe with Intel but they can't.

They need the moble, or Intel will beat the crap outta them in mobile. Also those chips listed are high popularity chips, so it shold be expected for a shortage after awhile...
😛

When the Turion came out they should have stop the Sempron and Athlon 64 though. AMD is just to small to try and keep up with Intel with to many choices.

To me the Sempron 754 is the dumbest one they released on the market.

first they're short opterons for desktop users, now they're short of all processors for desktop pc's? 😛

ROFLMAO!

And there are those that think CPU prices will go down.

Isn't it nice situation to be in. It sure doesn't bother AMD.

May there always be a shortage for AMD instead of the overage that Intel is having. You couldn't ask for a better thing to happen to anyone.

Merry Christmas everybody.

Exactly. AMD stock has done well this year too. Hopefully the run will continue.

Why stop producing the slower stuff? I can't even GET the Athlon 64 3000+'s anymore from my distributor...they just stopped carrying them....but I really liked them because they were at a KILLER price point and I could put together a really nice system for cheaper for people. Now I'm suck with the much higher priced 3200+.

Well, if they lowered the prices some more on the 4200 and higher chips they wouldnt have such an lopsided supply problem. ::chuckle::

I don't consider the Athlon 64 3000+ slower stuff, it's socket 939 and dual channel memory. I'm talking about socket 754 stuff. If AMD would focus harder on the GOOD stuff instead of trying to please everybody with hordes of models and versions. Do they really need the 3800, 4200, 4400, 4600 and 4800 for the x2 ?

They just seem to forget that they are much smaller then Intel and cannot produce in quanity for all models.
