AMD says 30 percent by year end -- believe it?

In various financial news articles (Reuters), AMD officials have predicted a 30% market share by the end of this year. While I'd love to see this happen, do you think it's really possible?

I don't think I've ever seen a single AMD ad on television -- which isn't surprising since their advertising budget is 1/10 that of Intel, if even. Wouldn't now be a good time to launch a strong marketing campaign, now that their processors are seriously leaving Intel's in the dust?

Do you all have any thoughts on this market?

It really depends on the success of the Duron series to gain that much market share, IMO...

I just looked up the numbers, it's unbelievable how much they (Intel in particular) spend on advertising!

Year 2000 1999 1998

Intel: $2.0B $1.7B $1.3B
AMD: $148M $101M $74M

Personally I think that if AMD is going to make any kind of investment in increasing their market share they should focus it on creating an inexpensive, stable integrated platform. The corporate market remains relatively untapped by AMD, a decent business platform would give them the best opportunity for growth.

IT departements don't need to see AMD commercials, they need to see that AMD is committed to improving their image in that market segment.
