In today's Wall Street Journal, check out page B1. The top article titled, Newly Competitive AMD Challenges Intel in Corporate Chip Market. Below is a paragraph that would be of interest to some of you guys on the board.

- Ground zero in the war: the top makers of PCs for business, including Hewlett-Packard Co., International Business Machines Corp., Dell and Compaq Computer Corp. AMD's Mr. Sanders has been involved in the talks with IBM, H-P and Compaq, and AMD sales executives have been playing golf with top executives at Dell to try to get them to put an AMD chip in their computers. Because AMD's chips perform as well as Intel's and are often cheaper, this should be an easy sell, but analysts say AMD's legacy of problems and Intel's ability to offer higher volumes and millions in "soft" marketing dollars are huge barriers. -

I know they are only talking about business pc's. But hey, at least DELL is actually talking! If AMD gets them, the last big company to hold out, AMD will finally break the last barrier! Of course this is of no consequence to most of the people here who build their own pcs (just built my first one!).

yea, AMD needs to be more agressive in selling its chips in the corporate sector.
they NEED to do this since 60% of the computers sold are for corporate use.

I was watching this on ESPN or ESPN2 yesterday. The AMD CEO won the putting challenge I believe.

Well they need coporate support desperately, but it will take a while. Even companies like Gateway or Compaq haven't established AMD in their business line yet. This is probably because the threat from intel and the fact that AMD only has two fabs and can't not supply adequeatly to corporations. I suspeect it will take a least another year.

If they can get Dell selling their stuff, and get a multiprocessor solution out (the latter they are going to do for sure of course), that will be wonderful. Dell has BIG sway for businesses. The reason is that they are actually a very good compnay. And with newer boards (like the MSI ones) being as compatible and stable as any Intel solution, things are looking up for them. Competition is a great thing.

WERD! You can say that again! AMD T-Bird 1.1 for $225? DAMN! Thank AMD so much for putting some pressure on INTEL. They also have to figure out how to make their chips produce less heat in addition to all the other things mentioned...

The bottom line is, if AMD were able to get DELL (2nd biggest computer company in the world) it would be the ulimate blow to Intel! AMD have 38% off the destop market now, according to Sharkyextreme, and that would increase even further with Dell jumping into the bandwagon!

Cheers guys..
