Let's do the Time Warp again! (back to 2009)

horror.png

i5 750 “Lynnfield” 4C/4T, 3.8 GHz, 16 GB (2 x 8) 1600 RAM CAS 9, Windows 7 x64 SP1, clean run

methodology and notes: As with the 8370E tests, I found that running the Blender render twice-in-a-row usually yields the best performance. Running it a third time doesn’t. So, the following scores are the best of two runs. This trend didn’t hold true on the Mac, of course, because of thermals and turbo.

Turbo is disabled on this Lynnfield as it was on the 8370E.

Blender with AMD's Ryzen file results, in order of performance, rounded to tenths

Who can you sum that up? Most ppl here don't read/speak Mandarin

What you need to know is the contest ends in in January 18th and apparently they will be giving away a Ryzen CPU as one of the prizes. So at least one SKU should be out in a month or so.

^ so RYZEN paper launch with reviews on CES ?

even if they launch 1 sku only, it will be enough to determine ST performance. that's the most important thing couple with price and p/w imo. cuz p/w can win them some mobile market.

Let's go for another round.

Core i7-2630QM, this time at 2.195GHz fixed frequency. Win10 x64 up to date, 8Gb (2x4, dualchannel) DDR3-1333 CAS9, running with Throttlestop in background.

Blender 2.78a x64

100 samples: 1m42.5s
150 samples: 2m30.8s
200 samples: 3m26.7s

The Stilt "SIMD" build, 2.78.4

100 samples: 1m14.5s
150 samples: 1m52.7s
200 samples: 2m27.0s

The Stilt "AVX2" build, 2.78.4

100 samples: 1m10.6s
150 samples: 1m46.7s
200 samples: 2m20.2s

So, for Sandy Bridge AVX2 is the fastest.

Skylake Core i5-6600 3.63GHz (default clocks, but Asrock uses a 100.9MHz base clock). 8Gb (2x4) DDR4-2133 CAS14, running with Throttlestop in background.

Blender 2.78a x64

100 samples: 1m03.9s
150 samples: 1m36.6s
200 samples: 2m07.7s

The Stilt "SIMD" build, 2.78.4

100 samples: 0m38.0s
150 samples: 0m56.8s
200 samples: 1m16.1s

The Stilt "AVX2" build, 2.78.4

100 samples: 0m36.5s
150 samples: 0m54.6s
200 samples: 1m12.7s

Again, for Skylake AVX2 build is the fastest.

Using the formula from rvborgh and jhu
- Core i7-2630QM Blender 2.78a 100 samples: 71115
- Core i7-2630QM Blender 2.78a 150 samples: 72506
- Core i7-2630QM Blender 2.78a 200 samples: 70530

- Core i7-2630QM The Stilt AVX2 2.78.4 100 samples: 103248
- Core i7-2630QM The Stilt AVX2 2.78.4 150 samples: 102474
- Core i7-2630QM The Stilt AVX2 2.78.4 200 samples: 103984

- Core i5-6600 Blender 2.78a 100 samples: 68978
- Core i5-6600 Blender 2.78a 150 samples: 68443
- Core i5-6600 Blender 2.78a 200 samples: 69032

- Core i5-6600 Blender AVX2 100 samples: 120759
- Core i5-6600 Blender AVX2 150 samples: 121091
- Core i5-6600 Blender AVX2 200 samples: 121258

For reference:
- Core i7-6900K (per AMD, 3.5GHz) Blender 2.78a 100 samples: 91429
- Core i7-6900K (per AMD, 3.5GHz) Blender 2.78a 150 samples: 95238
- Ryzen 3.4GHz per AMD Blender 2.78a 100 samples: 94118
- Ryzen 3.4GHz per AMD Blender 2.78a 150 samples: 98039

Interesting. It was the slowest for Lynnfield and slower than the "SIMD" build for Vishera (although dramatically faster than the standard builds). I'm going to do another round of Vishera testing at a Prime-stable clock to be certain of the results.

We seem to have an elephant in the room called Piledriver. The Ryzen Blender file makes PD look absolutely horrendous. But, with The Stilt's builds the picture changes. Very odd, indeed.

performance results comments:

—————————————

Vishera

8370E 4M/8T @4.4, 2133 CAS 9-11-10, Windows 8.1 x64
8370E 4M/8T @5, 1814 CAS 9, Windows 8.1 x64
8370E 4M/4T @5, 1814 CAS 9, Windows 8.1 x64

“SIMD” > “AVX2” > 2.75a > 2.76b > 2.77a > 2.78a

absolutely drastic speed increase from The Stilt builds over regular builds
significant speed gain from “SIMD” build over “AVX2” build
all score sets for each build follow the trend, without a single exception in any run
second run nearly always better result than first, third run almost never faster
regular builds get slower with each version increase, The Stilt’s builds are wild cards

100 sample score with 2.78a (4.4 GHz): 1:16.0
150 sample score with 2.78a (4.4 GHz): 1:53.9

—————————————

Lynnfield

i5 750 4C/4T @3.8, 1600 CAS 9, Windows 7 x64

2.75a > “SIMD” > 2.76b > 2.77a > 2.78a > “AVX2”

polar results from The Stilt builds: “AVX2” a bit worse than 2.78a and “SIMD” a bit below best
minor performance differences between The Stilt builds and regular builds
significant, not dramatic, difference between best speed builds and worst performers
all score sets for each build follow the trend, without a single exception in any run
second run nearly always better result than first, third run almost never faster
regular builds get slower with each version increase, The Stilt’s builds are wild cards

100 sample score with 2.78a: 1:22.0

Updated the list with the data from the Germans and merged it all together (had to leave some out because i could not accurately guess their turbo speed unfortunately). Pattern stays the same though :) Ryzen is going to kick some bootie! :) Hopefully the folks over there do not mind :)

Can I suggest something about Cinebench R15 score?

Can anyone with 5960X lock the CPU to 3.0 or 3.1 GHz max Core clock on 8C/16T, and run the CB R15 benchmark and post MT score?

Thanks for the updated list. Please add the following data points, thanks : )

8370E @4.4 non-turbo
150 samples: 1:53.9

8370E @4.4 non-turbo, 4M/4T (CMT off)
150 samples: 3:32.4

---------------------------------------------------------

That results list also shows the problem with the Blender test (i.e. why The Stilt's builds offer so much better performance with Piledriver). Ancient AMD processors like Athlon X2 7550 should not outperform Piledriver.

I think everyone should use The Stilt's two builds so we can build a picture of performance, regardless of the Ryzen CPU. Maybe then AMD will offer us a data points with those two builds to "clarify the situation". Right now, it looks to me like Blender 2.78a is not giving an accurate picture at all of construction core performance characteristics.

Until the vast performance gap on Piledriver between The Stilt's builds and 2.78a is explained in a manner that shows the actual validity of stock Blender as an effective tool for measuring Piledriver's ability, comparisons between construction core IPC and Zen IPC based on this test seem worthless.

What you need to know is the contest ends in in January 18th and apparently they will be giving away a Ryzen CPU as one of the prizes. So at least one SKU should be out in a month or so.

wow thats great news, are you participating on that contest?

*Note that this build had the slowest results with 2009 Lynnfield 4C/4T CPU while the "SIMD" build was just shy of the top spot.

**Note that this build was the fastest with the Lynnfield, just edging The Stilt's "SIMD" build. With Vishera, though, both of The Stilt's builds are much faster than the standard builds and there isn't nearly as much of a gap between the fastest-performing build on Lynnfield (2.75a) and the slowest (The Stilt's "AVX2" build).

These results show basically normal progress from build to build for Lynnfield but a horrific bottleneck for Vishera with standard Blender builds.

Even with CMT off (1 CU per module for 4M/4T) — The Stilt's "SIMD" build is much faster than the official Blender build.

Actually, IMHO... Blender is giving an accurate picture. BD/Piledriver just happens to be absolutely horrible (per second per core per Ghz) in it (2.78a) and we need to admit this instead of denying it and blaming the software (i mean Intel runs it perfectly well (and so does K10) so BD arch should do it reasonably well too and not choke). i wonder if AMD chose Blender as a proper benchmark to show that they have fixed this problem. i would say they seem to have done a brilliant job in fixing it with Ryzen :)

If Ryzen does this well with the "old" code... i wonder how well it will do with "new" code utilizing the newer instructions.

Your appraisal doesn't fit the data unless The Stilt's builds are somehow broken.

What the data shows is that the official Blender builds (at least since 2.75a) are not worthwhile benchmarks for Piledriver, and likely any construction core.

The Lynnfield data also strongly indicates that The Stilt's builds aren't broken.

You are ignoring the various entry/exit and alignment issues that exist on the bulldozer/piledrive FPU.
here is a simple example:
https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2013-01/msg00396.html

The better question is what actually changes between SSE build and AVX/AVX2 build?
Is the compile creating more friendly code thax to 3 operand?
are some of the new optimization in the code base that allow such a big uplift removing a bottle neck?
Is the improvement from using a different/newer compile that handles bulldozer better?

The issue isn't blender, its bulldozer or the code generated by the compiler for bulldozer.

This data progression doesn't look like it fits the claim that the reason we're seeing it is because of Piledriver's design inadequacies.

I really dont get what you are trying to point out with these random bunch of numbers.
