I'm thinking about upgrading my computer to something a little more recent. Please don't laugh right now I run an AMD T-Bird 850mHz with 512mb of PC100 RAM. I haven't had money over the past couple years to upgrade. I wanted to start out with new processor, ram and mobo. I don't have a lot of money so I don't even know if I can do this but I'm thinking ahead and I want an opinion on what I should get.... I want to keep it under $300 dollars if possible

So far I think I'm going to get a

AMD 2500+ Barton RETAIL $90
DFI nforce2 Ultra 400 NFII Ultra-AL $77
2 x Buffalo Technology 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3700 w/ Micron Module - OEM $96
TOTAL: $263

To me that seems like a pretty good setup, I hear the mobo is decent for overclocking and the reason I picked memory that was rated at pc-3700 is so I can push my FSB over 200 with ram that can handle it. If you have any suggestions please let me know and like I said above I would like to keep it under 300 dollars. Thanks.....

well your setup is good but try to find the Abit NF7-S V.2 it's cheaper and a monster overclocking board, and with the extra left get a good heatsink if you want to overclock you processor.

-------------------------------------------------
AMD Athlon XP T-Bred B 1700+ @ 2.3GHZ (1.75v) 400FSB = 3200+
Abit NF7-S V.2 (nforce 2 400U)
Corsair TwinX XMS 3200LL 512MB @ 2-3-2-6 (2.6v)
Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB
Antec TrueBlue 480W
Thermalright SLK-947U with 92mm Vantec Tornado @2600RPM
Maxtor 91531U3 15GB
2x Western Digital WD400BB 40GB serials
Antec PlusView 1000AMG

No, the Abit NF7-S is slightly more expensive, but it's a much better board. From what I've heard, the only good DFI OCing socket A board is the one that's $175. Newegg has the NF7-S for $92 shipped today only right here. They've been selling it for $100 shipped, though, which is still an awesome price for such an awesome board.

Me too.

locked XP2500 with a 200 Mhz FSB = XP3200... AMD CPU's aren't starved for memory bandwidth so having more memory bandwidth won't do much good if you have to use CAS 3 RAM to get more bandwidth. CAS 2 PC3200 would be much better... especially since you'd be lucky if you get past 2.2 Ghz anyway, most are capable of it, but not all.

So there is still a memory argument going on So what's the best memory for that price???

Also another thing what's the performance/overclocking difference between the
Abit NF7 $78
Abit NF7-S v2 $92

Is it worth the extra 14 dollars for the NF7-S V2

Thanks for all the help guys and keep the suggestions coming Also if you have any links to any reviews of these motherboards that would be very much appreciated!!!
