AMD Retail heatsink & fan sufficient?

Hey everyone!

This may be a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. I've built several AMD systems in the past and have always bought the OEM AMD processor and another HSF. How does everyone feel about the HSFs that come with the retail chips? I'm looking at building a system with the Athlon XP 1800/266FSB w/ the Thoroughbred core. This is the retail version at newegg for $78 and it comes with the HSF. Is this sufficient when running a front intake and rear exhaust case fan?

Thanks!
Tom

yep, definitely sufficient. Retail box also comes with one year warranty, while the OEM CPU with YOUR hsf gets only 90 day warranty.
The retail HSF, however, is not designed for any overclocking, as it will not cycle enough air to cool the overclocked processor. If you don't plan on overclocking, the retail HSF will work just fine (i think Coolmaster is the one that makes AMD HSFs)

1600+ @ 1800+ here with a retail heatsink (good paste though instead of the crappy pad)
And this is not an AGOIA, but an old one.

Well, I figured it would be sufficient, but you never can tell...so it doesn't hurt to ask 🙂

It comes with a 3 year warrenty. Not one well my 1700 T-BRED Retail came with a 3 year. I have a 1.4 T-Bird that runs way hotter than a XP using my XP's stock HSF It works great quite too.

The retail heatsink, especially the new one will do the job. The new one from what I have seen actually isn't half that bad like the original one. I have the original one which is a POS, but I am still able to OC my 1700+ (1.46GHz) to 1.6GHz, not bad in my opinion.

Tech TV did a segmant some time ago comparing different HSF's. To their own surprise, the OEM fan that came from AMD did as good a job as several exotic HSF's that sell for way more $$.

Retail box comes with a 3 year warranty not a 1 year.

when I had a retail AXP2K+, it had a HSF that was almost exactly the same as the antec reference cooler.

linky

It works fine. AMD and intel don't bundle crap HSFs with their CPUs. They're not the best, but they're always at least completely adequate for stock speeds.
