AMD Reports Q4 results + Conference Call Notes

They certainly changed a $97 million loss into a $16 million loss quickly. Good for them. Now just bump up the prices a bit more and then they will be back into profits.

"They certainly changed a $97 million loss into a $16 million loss quickly"

From AMD:

"When the effects of restructuring and other special charges are included, the company incurred a net loss in 2001 of $60,581,000, or $0.18 per share."

I realise you are talking about 4th quarter, but those #'s don't include any of the above mentioned hit.

Not bad at all for the worst year ever in semiconductor history. I'd say AMD should be extremely happy with the way the 4th Quarter turned out. They definitely beat Wall Street's estimates by a good sum. Same thing with Intel's 4th quarter, analysts were substantially off, underestimating net sales.

Intel and AMD really got murdered last year.

Btw, anyone get any feedback on the market share numbers for 2001?

EDIT: Interesting, here's what CEO Jerry Sanders had to say:

We believe AMD gained four points of unit market share in 2001 even as the worldwide personal computer industry experienced its first year-to-year unit sales decline.

I don't have any market share data, but this will be of some help:

(1) Intel net income fell 91% to $787M. Results reflect lower sales of microprocessors.
(2) Led by record unit and record dollar sales of PC processors, AMD reported fourth quarter net sales of $951,873,000, which resulted in a net loss of $15,842,000.

If Intel sales dropped and AMD sales are at record levels, then AMD must have gained a large amount of the market share. Now it is time for AMD to attempt to gain some of Intel's $787 million profit.

Now it is time for AMD to attempt to gain some of Intel's $787 million profit.

That will be key for AMD, especially since Intel has cut its capital spending plan (R&D) by nearly 25% for this year.

Great quarter Jerry. When you look at your performance and MHz in 2003 can you talk about your positioning? Can you talk about how competition changes when you have a foundry? Flexibility capacity, but middle man pricing?

Intel has a wide gain as they will get right now. 533MHz, do not expect to widen that MHz. At that difference we are in very good shape. Our 2000+ competes well with 2.2GHz part. Will not widen. Hammer will give us a massive performance advantage. 2003 is our breakaway year. You have already seen the best Intel can do. The smarter they are the better we look. The Athlon XP has been winning in all of the disinterested press if you will. -Jerry

"Intitial Hammer chipset will be made by AMD"

Thank God. 😀

It looks like Thoroughbred is right on schedule, perhaps slightly above schedule, even. That's very good news. 🙂
