AMD reminds me of Cyrix

Just playing around the 1.33 thunderbird system that I just built, and suddenly I'm reminded how much this was like the 1st Cyrix system I built 3-4 years ago?

-We are unofficially on the PR system. Many of us chose the Thunderbird over the P4 because a 1.4ghz K7 is on par with a 1.7ghz P4.

-Damn those thunderbirds run hot. Hotter than those cyrix.

-It is much cheaper than the Intel counterpart.

Yes, Athlons run hot, but can you possibly claim that the P4s (the higher frequencies, with performance similar to Athlons) run dramatically cooler?

Funny how you should mention the PR rating -- AMD used it with their 586's, K5's, and early on, even the K6's. AMD has used the PR-rating from both ends -- to make up for the fact that their IPC were lower, and when they were higher, than their Intel counterparts at similar frequencies.

I don't think AMD is similar in any way to Cyrix, from the point you seem to be referring back to (the 686 days) focused a great deal on IPC. AMD doesn't care anymore how they get performance. If they have a superior product have to bump up the frequencies to knock off Intel, they'll do that (they did with the P3). Now they're all about higher IPC, with the P4 in the lights now.

Cyrix managed to get 75mhz, and 83mhz "standard", while AMD has gotten 95mhz "standard". But AMD got the industry to move towards a totally different platform.
