If what that articles says is true, it would only mean the 5770 will be rebranded as 6770, and the 6770 will be the 6870 and so on.

Seems like they are just Improved their naming scheme even more. Nvidia still have a 465 that is slower than a 460, WTF is that?

AMD is doing a great job is keeping confusion to a minimum.
Nvidia? Well with Nvidia its just business as usual horrible naming.

Well if this naming this is right this time around. It does say abit about the new cards that AMD has in store come winter. Having the 6770 made into the 6870 means its just that good.

It will probably beat the GTX480 and there are STILL TWO cards that are faster according to that map.

If this is correct, it will be fun to see Nvidias responce.

copy and pasted from the other thread...

Nvidia hasn't even gotten all their 400 series cards out the door yet and ATI already has revisions on the way. lol. Nvidia would be getting an even more serious ass kicking if TSMC had not failed on 32nm.

and what is this nonsense about ATI rebadged cards? many of the Nvidia 9000, 200 and nearly all 300 series are just rebadges and we never got any proper 300 series cards anyway.

Seems that way. With the other thread mentioning nvidia having to slash the 460 price another $30.

Perhaps they've caught wind of the can of whoop ass ATI is about to unleash in the upcoming 6 series launch and are trying to unload the 460s while they still can.

Good chance once the 6 series has fully rolled out that nvidia won't be able to move much of anything with their first-gen DX11 cards, with better performance coming from ATI's second-generation DX11 cards at the same price.

Nv will be watching ATI control the market again while they demo cards made of wood planks and glue and spend another six months catching up.

Well we might be thinking too highly of the 6k series cards aswell you know. It may be that they arent that much better than Nvidias top card atm. And a possible, albeit unlikely, Fermi refresh could give the 6k series a competition for the money.

If this is true it seems like a sleazy tactic to raise the prices. I think downright rebranding (5770->6770) is unlikely, but making its mid-range flagship (Bart XT) as 6870, and the new high-end flagship (Cayman XT) as 6970 is in the realm of possibility. People regard HD x870 as the high-end stuff, and HD x970 as the highest-end stuff - and have expectations on pricing. (~$200 for midrange x770, ~$400 for high-end x870) Without competition from NV, AMD would be tempted to maximize profit and it will do anything and everything it can just like any corporation. And that means ~$300 for the new 6870 which would have been ~$200 6770, and ~$500 6970 which would have been ~$400 6870.

If this turns out to be true, I hope reviewers will point it out even if performance justify the prices. But more than anything we need NV to step up. Fast.

I wonder what qualifications you need to be the person in charge of naming the products?..LOL. Nvidia is terrible.....cant believe AMD in now going to do a NV and re-badge?

Yeah, the person or group who decided on the nVidia naming scheme should have been let go a lot time ago. nVidia doesn't typically employ idiots, but this is one area where they do. Of course the real truth is that nVidia (probably AMD too) want to have confusion. It probably sells more of those crappy FX5200 cards that you see at BB for $79.

I think this is just a marketing thing, not really an excuse to raise prices... More like "6870 is higher than 6770, so it will look better", and more people will buy it, etc

Rebranding has always been retarded, but it is funny Wreckage only starts a thread about AMD rebranding, when we all know Nvidia has been the one doing it for years

the only fermi refresh that will do any real good will be a die shrink at 32nm.

that sucks. so they have to wait for 28nm where AMD has another 6 months to a year to get ready ?
yes they have to wait for 28nm. the new ATI 6xxx cards were going to be 32nm too but they had to make do with 40nm.

Have to laugh at the topic the green caped crusader threadstarter has chosen given his teams terrible naming history.

With this supposed naming scheme the 6770 would still be filling the sub $200 price point?, leaving the 6870 for $300 territory? I was really hoping what we previously thought of as the 6770 would be $200.

I don't see a good price/performance for the 5770 unless it's $150 or less. It looks like something worthwhile at the 200 dollar price point will again be missed by AMD. The 5770 wasn't there for performance, nor was the 5830 for price or performance.

But this might all be wrong and the 6770 (Read: not a rebranded 5770) may hit the $200 mark.

Hmm, firesale on current stock of 5770? All those unpackaged JuniperXT cores can now have a 6770 BIOS flash and fancy new packaging.

So rebranding is bad, m'kay?

lol, maybe that was modestgamer's joke, "the only good fermi2 is the one that can't exist"...

hrmmm...suppose we better say something on-topic here...yeah rebranding!? :|

Good to see you didn't lose your sense of humor during the modding :)

Back on topic....How can you rebrand something that hasn't even been released yet?

I doubt that the HD 6770 will be a repackaged Juniper XT, because it already trails the HD 5870 by a great margin in terms of performance and considering that the HD 6870 is at least 50% faster than the HD 5870, a repackaged JuniperXT might be suitable for an HD 6670 ir HD 6470, it is too slow to justifiy its performance for the $200 price point.
