AMD Reality Check--Phila

Just got back from the Phila show, sorry to report I didn't score any processors, they were giving out 2200xp's. 🙁 Missed getting one twice by 2 numbers :Q Didn't make it into the build a box contest either 🙁 I know I could have beat the time of 22 minutes for building a box- all you had to do was put the mobo, ram, and video (if you picked a card instead of onboard video) into the case, hook up the cables and leads, and you were done. The hd, floppy, and cdrom were already installed. The guy who won completed his in 22 min, the runner up couldn't get his to run at all. Music was a little loud, the people in charge seemed more interested in getting people to dance rather than showing us anything about the processors themselves, and didn't see any tables for the discount coupons for motherboards--oh well. All in all not too bad a time. Hope one of you fares better 🙂

oh crap the one here is coming up soon... I forgot...
thanks for the reminder

sorry you didnt win anything!

In Atlanta the "runner up" was the lead tech for Best Buy. He managed to ground out the board and it was toast! I felt bad for him cause he seemed to be a nice guy. I wonder if they replaced the board? 🙂

22min. is like grandma speeds, I built my current system including cd and dvd roms, floppy, and hdd, -software in like 8min. and was taking my time, if I were rushed I coulda done it in about 5-6min. I guess yanking these apart and putting them back together for a living makes you faster at it eh?

I thought I could build / reassemble boxes pretty quickly, but there's no way I could come close to that speed! Anyhow, since I don't build computers very often, I usually take my time and savor the experience, since I find it quite fun to assemble them. 🙂

heheh... It takes longer for me because I take my time to make sure I don't goof something up and burn up parts. I can't afford to replace them if I rush and do something stupid.

....love to build them though. I get great satisfaction out of assembling the parts and making them work correctly.

🙂

Why would you wan't to build a computer in under 30 minutes? I take my time to make sure the job is done right 😉.

That would suck to kill a motherboard infront of all thoughs people.:Q

If I am in a hurry I can build a system pretty fast, maybe even in the 8-10 minute range, if I jam! But normally I like to take my time and enjoy the moment. Feel the parts in my hands, smell the freshly opened components right out of the anti-statci bag, rub the contours of the case, push a few buttons, start getting those cables organized, put a nice thin layer of Arctic Silver on my sexy AMD chip, attach the HSF so there is a perfect fit, as if they were made for eachother by some higher power, make sure the cdrom and floppy are mounted flush............phew...[gump voice] I feel dizzy [/gump voice]......confused;

Boy my wife sure wishes I worked her up the same way I do a computer.......damn I AM a geek! LOL 😱:

Disclaimer....
Just to clear the air on the above statement, I in now way make love to the PC's I build. I get into them but not as I described. That was purley for comical reasons ONLY. Please do not think I am a freak! LOL 😉

LMAO 😀

Electrode
I think 'build' in there terms refers to just throwing the hardware together ,that's the easy part😛.
I would guess your 'build' (& mine) includes the OS & the million programs you need to install afterwards😉

Went to Philly as well and posted my comments in the Hot Deals forum. They really need to move this things to the warmer months. I completely forgot the 25,000 warnings I've heard and only wore a pullover. Froze my @$$ off. If anyone who saw the guy who was doing the Harlem Shuffle for a AMD bag, that was my friend Dave that I work with. He almost was going to do the beat box but the white guy who did it first was way too good.

No processors but did come out w two shirts. I'm not really a big guy (6'2"/190lbs) but why would they give out large shirts to computer geeks?

I will find out more when I go on Thursday in Minneapolis. I don't expect much, but if I score a cpu, it might just end up in a system. But if I can't get any money by then, I might have to sell it to pay some bills. 🙁 Not having a steady job realy sucks...

I know Wolfie, there are a lot of people in the unemployed boat all over and a lot right here on AT. I've suggested a Job Networking thread but that hasn't gone anywhere, just like the economy.

Main thing when you go to the show, drop the three stubs in their respective boxes right away and head straight to the Battle of the Boxes table and fill out forms like crazy until they take the box to the stage for the drawing. That is your best way to increase your chances of getting your form drawn.

a guy from my work can build upwards of 50 boxes a day, assembly line style 😛

I should get him to go to this

Thanks Dave. I am leaving my house right now to go to the show. I will come back in a few hours and let you all know how it went. 😀

Oh, and if anyone else is at the minneapolis show, look for me in my TeamAnandtech hat like Dave wore on his info mercial. 😀
