AMD RaidExpert and synchronization

I've got raid 1 mirroring on my main drive for a server. I installed AMD's "RaidExpert" program and there's a place to set up a schedule to "synchronize" the array. I thought that was the purpose of raid 1 in the first place - why would it need to synch up? Should I put it on a synch schedule?

RAID 1 is mirroring for the purpose of having immediate online data redundancy to protect against drive failures. The array needs to be synchronized to ensure the data on the two drives matches. Yes, put it on a schedule that fits your needs.

how often is good? this is on a medical network for a small office and they keep medical records that are accessed every day - nightly? does synching up the risk of any sort of failure?

For medical records, as in forms/bills, then yes, nightly.
For medical images and stuff of that nature, then I would do it every 4-5 hours, depending on how much data we are talking about though. Sometimes, it isn't very practical for huge arrays.

I also think you should be using RAID 5 for anything medical related. But you didn't ask that. 😉
