AMD R7 240 equivalents (power draw, TDP, compute)

Given my current constraints in terms of my setup (which cannot be changed anytime soon), I'm limited to the power draw and TDP of something like the R7 240.

I've heard that AMD has better compute than Nvidia's offerings at any given price point. Still, I thought I'd ask here to see if there are any other options that could compete with the R7 240, given my constraints.

I'd go for the GT 630, but the TDP is more than double that of the R7 240.

The GT 620 seems like a viable option in terms of TDP, but does it have more compute than the R7 240?

Could you deal with more TDP and power draw temporarily? If so, could you install a GTX 750/750ti and underclock it? I wouldn't go for anything Nvidia prior to Maxwell in this case.

Why can't you do the standard 75W?

Well I just want a dirt cheap GPU to add to each system I have, without having to tinker with anything else.

The systems in question are Q9650 systems (running at stock) in SFF mATX cases, with 300W PSUs. That's why I can't really afford much more power draw, or heat being generated (the CPUs running at full load reach 70 °C as it is, depending on ambient temperature).

In regards to my original question though: see thread

I just recently added some Kepler-based GT630 (384SP) Zotac GPUs to my Q9300 @ 3.0 rigs. They are rated for 25W TDP (max), are passively cooled, and I don't think that the GPU temp has exceeded 60-odd C. They certainly don't seem to add much heat, like my HD4850 cards did when crunching.

Oh, they come low-profile ready, as well.

The R7 240 is rated at 30W, with a GFLOPs capability nearing 500 (the GT 630 is around 300 GFLOPs iirc). Both cards cost around the same, so it makes more sense for me to go the R7 route, right?

I'm sorry, I actually couldn't tell you which one was faster for F@H. In your comparison, are you using the 384SP Kepler GT630, or the 96SP Fermi GT630? If they are indeed as you say, I probably would go with the R7 240 then. I wanted something without fans for my rigs. They start to fail after 24/7 usage.

If you mean "Rev. 2", then that's around 700 GFLOPs. I have no idea why I didn't read this correctly earlier.

27.68 GFLOPS/Watt, I guess I didn't make a bad choice there. Thanks for the link.

Btw, the Zotac "ZONE" GT630 with 384SPs and 1GB DDR3 was $34.99 last week at Newegg. I picked up seven of them in total. Now they're back to $59.99 + $3.99 ship.

Edit: Now they're $34.99 minus 10% off promo code!
