I'm new to this forum so this may be an extremely stupid question... but here goes...

My motherboard can handle up to a K6-3 500. I was wondering if i could use a cheap Athlon and set the motherboard to think it's a K6-3 500...?

thanks in advance!

K6 processors use a Socket 7 interface. Athlons use Socket A - they have different pin counts, and can't be intermixed.

Since you have a SS7 (SuperSocket7) mobo, the latest (& last) processor upgrade you can do is to the AMD K6-2/3+ series.

They're built on a smaller die (.18 micron). Tom's has a good review on them. Be aware: not all motherboards support the + series.
