AMD prices going up, not down...

...at NewEgg, anyway.

Just did a spot check of A64 3200+ and XP 2500+. Both are up a buck from Monday's prices.

Just got my AOpen AK86-L and Thermaltake Silent Boost HSF from mwave. Now awaiting delivery of remaining parts from NewEgg. Could have got the entire bundle at once from mwave and had only one shipping cost, but was holding out for the reported AMD price cut. :frown:

Pricecuts going to happen in 4 days... you can expect small fluctuations in prices it doesn't stop the price cut from happening.

I've been waiting for the rumored price drops as well. Nada so far.

If they don't go down in price (or even go up), I definately won't buy an A64.

If they do go down in price, I might buy one.

How's that for commitment!!!!

funny...
i ordered my AOpen AK86-L and Thermaltake Silent Boost HSF from mwave but i also ordered the a64 3200. fed ex says that it's being delivered today. guess i lucked out on that one. out of curiosity, why order the processor from newegg? when i ordered (weekend), the processor was much cheaper at mwave.
just checked again... $270-oem at newegg, $255-oem at mwave

Just tryin' to seperate the impulse shoppers from as much of their refund checks as they can, while they can 😛

I ordered the A64 3000, not the 3200. 3000 was negligibly cheaper on newegg (~$2.00), but I didn't want to spend the extra on the 3200 even at mwave's very good price (though I did think about it). For my needs, I don't think the extra cache is worth the extra cash (Sorry, couldn't resist!) I already had a bunch of goodies in the newegg cart when I found out about mwave and the AOpen board. I ordered the board over the weekend to take advantage of the $10 rebate.

I was trying to wait until the 15th to order the proc, but the system I'm on is having major stability problems right now. I barely had time from its previous BSOD to log onto newegg, hit the Checkout button, and confirm the order before it crashed again. I need the rig for school and can't afford to fall farther behind than I already am.

I've never ordered PC components on the web before. I always go to Fry's or Central Computer. I'd heard a lot about newegg, nothing about mwave. I can say now that I'm very impressed with the speed and efficiency with which mwave processed my order.

good point, i was also on the fence between the 3000 and the 3200. the benchmark difference is minor... but as DAPUNISHER said,

Just tryin' to seperate the impulse shoppers from as much of their refund checks as they can, while they can

i was feeling not quite as poor as usual and went for the 3200.

2.8E (Prescott) is $185 at Newegg. AMD will almost certainly want to equal or undercut that with its Athlon 64 3000. I am hoping for $150, $175 seems more likely though.

I don't think AMD will try to undercut that.

WHY would amd undercut a 2.8ghz chip with their 3000+??? i think they would undercut the 3.0ghz unless they are insane!!

Screw patience . . .

I needed a system LAST week and WAS gonna buy an A-64 but had to "settle" for a 2.8Ghz P4 (happily O/C'd to 3.4Ghz @ default). 😛

While the enthusiast crowd recognizes that the Athlon 64 competes with the Pentium 4 in terms of performance at the same price point, the average person has still never even heard of AMD. So, AMD must be more bang for less buck, not just more bang for the buck in order to get it's brand name out there.

If AMD needs to do so, they will, but I think sales are good so they probably won't.

Pfft, they'd do it because they could. If you were a business, would your mission statement be "We'd like to keep pace with our competitors?" Hell no, you'd want to crush them with extreme prejudice any way you could. If this undercut sucks sales away from Intel, then it's doing exactly what it was meant to do.

Not if you werent making enough/ any profit. I am sure they try to keep a certain profit margin, as they are slowly trying to make money.

Well at $200+ they are not going to sell anywhere near 1 million Athlon 64s this quarter.

The best thing AMD has going for it is 64 bit Windows XP, and Microsoft is not going to bust their butts getting it done for a couple hundred thousand potential buyers. AMD needs to sell as many Athlon 64s as they can as soon as they can. The longer they wait, the shorter the time period between Windows XP64 and Intel releasing a 64 bit chip. That is the period of time when AMD has a clear cut advantage in marketing over Intel(not to mention what appears to be some very nice potential performance improvements).

If AMD plans on waiting until they can do 90nm before they starting selling Athlon 64 to the mainstream, then I won't expect Windows XP64 to be ready until the end of the year. By that time Intel will be more than happy to buy a few months delay on Windows XP64 until there 64 bit chips are ready.

There is no way that Microsoft will ever release a 64 bit OS without Intel being ready for it. It makes no difference what AMD has as far as capabilities for 64 bit software. Plan on seeing an Intel cpu capable of running 64 bit apps right about the time that Microsoft comes out with something.

Why ? both Microsoft and Intel are big time Nasdaq companies, AMD is an NYSE listing. Imagine the black eye that Microsoft would give Intel if they rolled out something that Intel did not support. It will never happen.

hugenstein. you do understand that AMD cannot keep a supply of these chips?? they are selling the fastest i believe of any proccessor they have ever made.

faceless, and nitromullet.
i understand business practices. and in most business practices you try to make a profit, or find the right price to sales ratio. and undercutting the competitor to try and make more sales, while getting less profit is not always the right way. keeping profit high, while maintaining the highest goal of sales is what you want. and us "enthusiasts" are not mainstream. AMD can sell the chips to HP, gateway, etc. for much less than they sell to newegg since HP is basically selling to mainstream and giving advertising for them.

Right on, AMD created this window of opportunity and they'd be foolish not to exploit it as best they can, whatever that ends up being.

A quick Google shows some old news that Athlon 64 supplies are low. If that is still true, AMD has no reason or ability to cut prices to increase sales.
