AMD price drop?

My friend is building a computer for me. Sense AMD is coming out with the new AM2 chips in June, will there be a price drop for the 939 chips and when will it take place?

I'd guess so. But if he doesn't want to wait for AM2, that's fine because if S754 is any indication, S939 will be around for a while.

s939 proc prices may or may not drop depending on how well AM2 performs in comparison. Retail prices for CPUs might not budge at all if AM2 proves to be a poor overclocking platform(as some have speculated).

DDR1 prices should also be watched carefully.

AMD just had a price drop February 13th so maybe in March sometime. Depends on when the AM2 hits the market I guess.

I don?t think AM2 is targeted to totally take over s939 this year. I think there might be some price reductions but not large ones as if a product is being discontinued and replaced.

People suggest that s939 is EOL, but i don?t think it will be, not until the end of the year once it is being fazed out permanently by 65nm. However the FX60 was the last s939 model to be released and this was already released in January.

So who knows for sure. Once AM2 is launched we will have a better idea on AMD?s agenda for s939

My guess is any price drops on s939 will be more or less countered by price increases in ddr ram, and lack of availability of the parts you want.

So are you saying hang on to my 2*1GB sticks when I switch to AM2, then sell them later when they are rare? ........ I can smell big proffits hehe 😛.

Not necessarily, I'm just saying that as ddr2 becomes really the only 'current' ram, you'll see an increase in prices for ddr; so waiting around to save $20-100 on a s939 processor may not be a worthwhile proposition, if you're likely to spend a good deal of that savings on ram, or if you can't get the motherboard you actually want because they don't make it anymore, etc.

😱 Will DDR prices likely still be Ok by the end of the year? I.e. not gone up (or much)?

Good question. And can anyone else confirm what 3chordcharlie said about DDR Ram increasing.

I'm not claiming any sort of inside information here😉

When ddr is not longer a current product, the price will go up; have you trie to buy sd ram lately 9like, in the past three years)?

DDR2 has already crossed over to being cheaper than ddr where I am.
