I have an Opteron 144 processor at the moment and was wondering if i should make the jump to dual core or wait for a while. Not going to be doing a lot of encoding. Most of the time I'm playing games on here.

AMD dual core (socket 939 at least) is going to get cheap, and then most likely disappear.

My take on things is a computer is for doing things, and a dual core A64 positions you to do everything that's going to come around in the next couple of years, including the next version of windows, comfortably; so why not take advantage of a big price cut while parts are still readily available?

If you have any interest in the latest and greatest, bragging rights, etc, then you won't be happy with a cheap X2, period. In that case you shouldn't bother.

Most people in your home town don't even know what a dual core processor is...only on the internet (which doesn't matter IMO, you don't see these people everyday) can you brag that you have the latest Kentsfield quadcore processor. AMD X2's are going to be cheap till around christmas and then the S939 ones will disappear. If you overclock it to 2.5ghz+ and get 2gb of ram, your computing experience will be very very good. I for one am buying an X2 3800+ and building a budget rig with my winchester 3000+.

s939 parts should be around 'till the the middle of next year as long as there is demand. AMD's last ORDER date is 12/31 but it's last ship date is some time in July 07.

That's exactly the conclusion I came to when I was thinking about upgrade. I can't think of even one person whose computer MIGHT be better than mine. The only reason I want new stuff is for the internet.

Wicka, hows that Chaintech? I'm looking for a budget board, and the egg has those for like $40 shipped (refurb).

Sorry to jack the thread!

Well I don't really overclock, so I couldn't let you know on that, but the thing is rock solid stable, probably the only board I haven't had any problem with. Everything is placed really nice on the PCB and it's easy to work with. Only thing is that it doesn't have Firewire; I don't know if that's a problem for you, but I've never owned anything that needed firewire (especially with USB 2). On a side note, if I do end up upgrading, I'll be sellling it ;)
