Not deep enough. AMD needs to cut their prices literally in half or more to actually slow the slide.

I agree...

Great for existing AMD owners who may want to upgrade a cpu on exsting stuff, but nothing here would make me buy one compared to similarly priced/performanced stuff BY Intel IN the dual core area....the single core prices are very nice, but quite honestly I dont think I would even recommend a single core to my own parents...Not at their 4-5 year upgrade pattern...

In half huh? AMD already owns the low-end market as the C2D 6300 is still a bit high for most in that segment. Lowering their prices even more will solidify their dominance in the mainstream market (read: our parents and everyday users). Every computer I've made in the past 6 years has been AMD only for this reason. Had Intel offered the better price/performance ratio, I would have gone with them.

I don't think they're sliding near as much as you think. The price factor beats out performance any day of the week in most consumers eyes. Our eyes however are much more informed so if we were to build a computer for ourselves, it'd be C2D no less.

I think I may hold off on that X2 4400 purchase that I was planning. I am making a terminal upgrade on 939, and I know there is a risk that the 939s will disappear completely, but I will take a risk to save $30.

Ppl where still buying Pentium's D when X2's had better price/performance ratio for the very same reasons some are buying AMD processors today.

Let's take into consideration what the charts looks like after these drop take affect assuming these prices are legit.

Official AMD pricing. This of course assumes no overclocking.

Athlon 64x2 5600+ 505USD, No Change Competing with the E6700, Intel is superior
Athlon 64x2 5400+ 485USD, No Change

Athlon 64x2 5200+ 295USD Now, Drop to 231USD Competing with E6400, this is now Even
Athlon 64x2 5000+ 285USD Now, Drop to 221USD
Athlon 64x2 4800+ 244USD Now, Drop to 215USD
Athlon 64x2 4600+ 215USD Now, Drop to 194USD Competing with E6300, this is now Even
Athlon 64x2 4400+ 203USD Now, Drop to 169USD Competing with E4300, this is now Even
Athlon 64x2 4200+ 173USD Now, Drop to 154USD
Athlon 64x2 4000+ 158USD Now, Drop to 143USD
Athlon 64x2 3800+ 138USD Now, Drop to 122USD

Athlon 64 3800+ 101USD Now, Drop to 92USD
Athlon 64 3500+ 91USD Now, Drop to 87USD
Athlon 64 3200+ 81USD Now, Drop to 77 USD

So basically AMD has no price answer to the E6600, E6700 and X6800 but that is continued to be expected. With these drops AMD will be performance competitive with Intel's E4300, E6300 and E6400 until Intel drops it's prices in April 22nd 2007.

I posted this a week ago. :p

Were did the 22 April 07 date come from for Intel's price cuts? My tax refund is supposed to arrive on friday, and I'm itching to complete my build. I was going to hold off until Intel cuts their price, but its coming near the end of April, screw it.

That is true. I also suspect some people are still buying Pentium D chips to this day because it is higher MHz than the C2D. :p

With these tactics AMD is working on owning the "budget consumer" market. This means the cheap eMachines, HPs and Dells. Take overclocking out of the equation and double the importance of low price.

Ya know something? The Core 2 Duo makes me sad. Why? Because it has raised not just the performance bar (which makes Zap happy) but has raised the average price that people are willing to pay. This is similar to the latest/greatest video cards. Pricing for top tier performance has crept up for video cards while all other hardware had continued to slide down, as hardware pricing should. Now, suddenly, with C2D people are willing to pay more.

RAM is another one that goes up... but then goes down... and up... and down. That's a strange creature in its own right.

sorry to burst your bubble but AMD is NOT performance competitive with any of the new Intel CPU`s...

These are the Q2 2007 price that were mentioned a while back. Before that there is unlikely to be any cuts on Core 2 Duo processors.

Stock they are just fine, there will be a handful of benches were either Core 2 Duo or a Athlon 64x2 are ahead but overall they are quite even.

http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-1057-...risbane-vs-e6300-review-benchmark.html

That is a E6300 vs 4400+ and it looks quite even, I suggested the 4400+ for the E4300 so it's more then fair for performance.

The E6300 gets to go against the 4600+ and given the benchmarks by Anandtech

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2903&p=4

They are quite good competitors.

Lastly the E6400 gets to go around the 5000+/5200+ so it's quite a good matchup there as well.
