RELIABLE SOURCES said that AMD will respond to pricing by Intel by dropping prices, dropping some chips and introducing some new Opterons on February the 14th next.
AMD will do this by introducing the Opteron 252 and 852, a 2.5GHz processor, at the current 250 prices, and racking down the lower CPUs by one price level.

This will mean that the 140, 240 and 840 become end of line models.

AMD is also suspending rebates on Athlon 64 chips for the channel on December the 26th, but this is only a temporary suspension. The rebates will be brought back on the 10th of January, and then become part of the price cuts the following month.

On the technical side, chipsets that support Rev D CPUs will support dual core CPUs as well - expected now in the third quarter. Rev 3G chips don't support dual chips, while Rev D is essential for the X62 Opterons.

We reported earlier this week that Intel is readying a number of price reductions in the New Year
