AMD Phenon 2 550 Black + ASUS MB $130

Fry's, today only, AMD Phenon 2 550 BE with an ASUS M4A78L-M motherboard for $130.

The Asus is an ATI/AMD chipset that will allow unlocking as long as the southbridge is 705 or later (this one has the 710). They had the NVidea chipset the last time they offerred this chip. It cannot unlock the other cores.

I bought the combo, returned just the mb and bought a Biostar with the refund. The 3rd and 4th core would NOT unlock--probably just the wrong lot number.

I took it back just before they had the 965 + sata3, usb3 mb for $199--that's what I have now.
 
Darn! There goes another highly desired cpu/mobo combo again! I guess it's time to move apartment next to Fry's!
 
If you follow Fry's combos, this one isn't as good as the ones they've had in the past couple months...especially for a 1 day sale. But if you're not near a Fry's, I guess they all look good.

Fry's had the same CPU with a lower-end Gigabyte motherboard for $69 last month.

If you go in and explain your situation--I had a nvidia chipset and wanted an amd/ati for unlocking the 3 & 4 cores. I told them that the geek that was helping me told me to get all AMD so they gave me the credit back on the mb only. Mind you, the mb was only $53, so I paid another $20+ to go to a Biostar mb, but it was worth it--it was Amd/ATI. The retail for both boards was the same ($74.99) but they wouldn't swap them. Just a credit and buy what you want--in fact, I didn't even need tobuy the board, I could have walked out with my refund and a cheap x2 550 BE.

I tried this because my buddy did the same on a combo that had a MSI board - absolute junk with heavy return % due to DOA.

Gotta thank you for posting this. I've been on the fence on getting numerous new systems or a new mobo/cpu combo. This looked OK but I was kicking myself for missing some good deals.

Then I saw your post and noticed you could unlock these extra cores!! I bought it, unlocked the cores, installed win7 on this pc right now, and am loving it! I put in a $50 HS50 Corsair watercooler heatsink, and my system is running super quiet and cool. I'm going to get some 1200 DDR2 ram and overclock these bad boys.
