AMD Phenom X4 DC review

I ordered a Phenom X4 9500 (the only one available so far) and it will arrive tomorrow or on wednesday according to the shipping service.

What DC projects do you want me to test on it for you?

I'll do for sure:
Folding@Home
Rosetta@Home
WCG (all projects)
DPAD

If anyone could provide some test results of an equivalent Intel CPU, we could do a real DC power comparison.

EDIT: Added DPAD to the project list!
EDIT2: See update below

Since DPAD on AMD already outperforms the Core Duo clock for clock, I'm curious about how well the Phenom does. That will be the upgrade path for the computer I'm currently working at (it'll need new mobo and RAM also).

As mentioned Folding performance would be interesting, particularly 2653 (abundance of these SMP units) and 2608-2610, these seem to be cache dependent WU's. I'd love yorkfield results aswell, i've been searching for them for weeks, but can only find non smp results 🙁 . that is of course if anyone has a QX9650 laying around they are willing to test F@H on!

Could you please do (at least) Edit: four Riesel Sieve WU of each type? (Sieving is default, and LLR is the "test application".) That should also give an indication of performance on several other apps, like Seventeen or Bust.

As with JonB, I'd be kind of interested in the Phenom in Muon1 perforance too :laugh: Unfortunately we've already spent our computer budget for the year here but at least I could add another bar to the graphs in the benchmarking thread

They have the 9600 and 9700 model at my local computer store for $286 and $296. But It doesn't look like they have the newer AM2+ Mobo

**** Here's a teaser! ****

Installed! (on a MSI K9N Platinum with 2GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM and a Geforce 8800GTX)

Now the downside...
According to AMD the new Phenom should work with all somewhat recent AM2 boards, MSI says "testing" in combination with the most recent Bios, which means in 90% of all cases YES.
However the computer doesn't even boot, the monitor stays black, I'll try a beta Bios, in case it doesn't work, I'll order an AMD 790FX mainboard.

EDIT: I ordered this mother board!

@Neurodog:
Sorry, I'm still waiting for the mainboard to arrive (scheduled for monday).

@dajeepster:
I wasn't sure whether to choose the MSI K9A2 Platinum or the Asus. (Asus and MSI are my favourite motherboard brands). The only reason I chose the Asus was because it was except for the Gigabyte mainboards the only one to be on stock and it has some more extra features to play with 😀

I wasn't interested in the Gigabyte mainboards because I had 2 extremely bad boards (in the socket A days) from that brand.

No problem,

Just waiting to see the performance of F@H before I make my purchase. I know Q6600 will be faster but I'd like to help AMD.

that hasn't been proven in F@H yet! I wonder if the L3 cache has some DC benefits!

That's the board I was thinking about getting. what made you decide to get this one?

I've got an AMD Phenom 9500 coming from newegg. I'll be using Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory and popping this in a GIGABYTE 3D Mercury GZ-FW1CA-AJS Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Water Cooling Case and a couple raptors in RAID0
do you already have the ballistix? I've overall heard good things about them but I did have one of my 1gb sticks fail after 5 mos of non stop crunching 🙁 they are currently in rma-land. thankfully I still have that hyper-x stick...

I've heard many people's "guesses" on DC performance of the phenoms, it will be nice to see real stats!

stay tuned for the results 🙂

who did you get your board thru?
I can't find a decent etailer that has it in stock.
