It looks like Barcelona is finally coming ... time to find out if this chip is going to be the good/the bad or the ugly ...

I haven't a good precentiment about this processor. Everyone waits that Phenom be better than the actual Core 2 Duo and Quad (Me too.), but some tests (A stand in Computex 2007, por example.) shows Barcelona making the same pontuation of Clovertown in Cinebench, what isn't good for AMD.
AMD today annunciated that the first versions of Barcelona (2258, 2260, 2262, 2264, 2266 and 2268.) won't have HyperTransport 3.0, the principal feature of Barcelona, principally in servers where a high bandwidth is necessary.
The Barcelona models characteristics are: Cache L2 with 512KB por each core, 2MB shared Cache L3, 65nm construction, Socket F+ compatibility and SSE3 128-bits support (Who AMD calls SSE4A.). The models frequencies are:

2258: 1,9GHz
2260: 2,0GHz
2262: 2,1GHz
2264: 2,2GHz
2266: 2,3GHz
2268: 2,4GHz

wow a different model for every 100Mhz increase... Wouldn't that mean an expected improved IPC? I do not believe AMD is so stupid to think they can charge a for such small increase in clock speed if it didn't have a pretty good increase in performance.

Also about the Barcelona not having HT3 in the first revision, isn't this because they will fit in previous AM2 and +1207 mobo that have only HT2 designs. HT3 is as much a mobo/chipset design as it is a CPU in terms of how it works. I could be wrong about this but thats what i remember hearing.

Anyway my system still treats me good so i am not expected to be buying a whole new one still next summer, so that plenty of time to see what pans out of AMD and even Intel top the topper.

also the Opteron Barcelona's are supposed to be released in August right? http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40465 .... oh damn did i just quote theinquirer, shame on me :(

Wow, you could probably get fat rich short selling AMD at this point.

I really don't want AMD to fail though because with no competition Intel will rape us almost as bad as AMD did when they held the performance crown. We need AMD to keep Intel in line.

AMD is stupid for making a new chip for every 100mhz. At least overclockers will be happy.

I have a feeling phenom will be less than phenomenal

So Barcelona is the server platform and Phenom is the desktop platform? Are both quad core?

Regarding the quoted post, would it be possible to incorporate HT3 using a completely overhauled bios revision or would there need to be some revisions in the actual hardware portion of the system?

also will the new barcelona HT3 series of the pack be compatible with HT2 mobos today, with like dual compatibility or will they only support HT3 and nothing else?

That's right. And yes, all barcelona's will be quads but phenom is either FX, x4 (quad) or x2 (dual cores). Something like that :p

Not quite.

Barcelona is the codename of the quad-core workstation/server product. Consumers will continue to call it Opteron.

Agena is the codename of the quad-core consumer desktop product. It will be branded as Phenom.

New hardware (motherboard) is needed to support HT3.

Barcelona supports up to HT2. Agena supports HT3.
