Will this CPU be compatible with future AMD motherboards ? It is a AM3 CPU and is about to be released.

It runs at 3.6GHZ and I will be purchasing it upon release if it will.

So should I pick up a good AM3 motherboard for this CPU ? Or should I hold off a bit, and wait on the new AMD platform ?

By the way, what is AMD's new platform that is coming ? Fusion ? Or are there particular motherboards ? Something along the lines of a AM3+ ?

3.6GHz Deneb coming, too,

AMD is planning to introduce new flagship six-core and quad-core processors over the coming weeks.

The Thuban portfolio will be expanded by the fastest AMD six-core to date, the 3.3GHz Phenom II X6 1100T. Unsurprisingly, the 1100T has a 125W TDP and with Turbo Core overclocking it will happily run at 3.7GHz, which is quite impressive. Power-conscious consumers will also get something new, the 1065T with a 95W TDP rating. It is clocked at 2.9GHz, or 3.4GHz with Turbo Core.

Interestingly, 1090T prices have come down by around 10 percent in recent days, which might imply that the 1100T is just around the corner and that it will retail under $300.

In addition to the new Thubans, AMD will also introduce the fastest Deneb yet. The Phenom II X4 975 is clocked at 3.6GHz, making it the highest clocked quad-core desktop CPU on the market.

Yes, according to AMD it is compatible with AM3+ boards.

So should I pick up a good AM3 motherboard for this CPU ? Or should I hold off a bit, and wait on the new AMD platform ?

New platform is 6+ months away, It depends on how long you can wait.

By the way, what is AMD's new platform that is coming ? Fusion ? Or are there particular motherboards ? Something along the lines of a AM3+ ?

Ontario/Zacate and Llano, which are Fusion based, are not compatible with AM3+ boards. Zambezi, first gen bulldozer platform, does not have any fusion products.

For now, AM3+ and Fusion does not mix.

Yes. AMD has stated that the new motherboards for Bulldozer (AM3r2 or AM3+ as it is being called today unofficially) will be backwards compatible for AM3 CPUs (a sort of consolation prize when they announced that Bulldozer won't be compatible with existing AM3 motherboards).

So should I pick up a good AM3 motherboard for this CPU ? Or should I hold off a bit, and wait on the new AMD platform ?
It depends. As the currently-accepted facts are, if you buy any AM3 board today, you will have to buy a new one if you wish to upgrade immediately to Bulldozer. Otherwise, you can wait (no timeline that I am aware of; might as well be indefinitely) until they release the newer boards.

If immediate upgrade to Bulldozer is not a concern, you can just buy any AM3 board, and you can stick with your rig for a year or two, maybe more. You have no Bulldozer upgrade options, but you would have Thuban options. Although, seeing as to how you are already planning on procuring a very top-end X4 part, it does not seem likely that any Thuban offerings would entice you, unless you suddenly need more than 4 high-clocked cores.

So when you say new platform is 6+ months away, is that the AM3+ that is six months away ?

All the other information you just gave me, perfect. Thanks...

Nice find, just posted this back on OCN. What disappoints me though is the lack of a 95W 955
Though the 95W 945 probably works for now, because I highly doubt a 95W 955 will remain black edition.

There's no need to buy such a fast Phenom II X4. I got my 905e which defaults at 2.5ghz up to 3.8ghz. I'm sure that I could hit 4ghz with better cooling.

If you can get a cheap combo deal on a Phenom II setup, it's not a bad option. My motherboard and CPU cost $140 in a bundle.

Why are you looking at an X4 975 anyway?

If you buy now, you're going to end up with an EOL platform, not to mention similarly priced but faster SB chips are coming in 2 weeks.

Hmm X4 975 is compatible with Am3+ socket , and op could definitely carry over other components like am , hdd e.t.c if he wants to get Am3+ socket motherboard next year.

So only thing that is not future proof in your X4 975 purchase is just the socket AM3 MOTHERBOARD.

NOTE : AMD Buldozer processor scheduled for release next year is only socket AM3+ compatible.

But the question remains....Is this still going to be released ?

Changing motherboard/drivers/OS is second nature. Not a pita for me.

Yeah, and changing a mobo + reinstalling OS, drivers and all your apps is a major PITA.

So much easier when it's a drop in upgrade.

My upgrade from a Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 (rev. 1.0) to a Asrock 870 Extreme3 I was able to just swap the MB and RAM and Windows booted perfectly fine even with the boot partition being Raid 0. I expect the transition to bulldozer will be similar unless Windows freaks when it gets another 4 cores, I know XP did when going from 1 to 2.

Just get a 965. It will do what 975 will by just bumping up the multi one notch and nothing else

The 975's seem to overclock to 4.2. I already have everything else for a 3rd build. Just waiting on this cpu.

My chip also does 4.2.. but needs a better cooler.. no one can guarantee on the max OC of a chip. Even 955's and 965's hit 4.2. IMO Thuban's OC consistently better than Deneb's.

Hmm...good points. Maybe ill just grab the 965 then. Getting tired of seeing this stuff sit here in the corner. Needs finished.
