I am starting another build and wanted to know if this is a good budget cpu. It is pretty cheap on newegg and also wanted to know if this is a good gaming cpu paired with a GTX 660?

It is quite dated, being a 45nm CPU. However, that also makes it cheap. An Intel Ivy-Bridge core i3 CPU may be faster than it, for games that don't use four threads.

You also need a mobo with beefy VRMs on it, to handle the 965's 125W TDP. (Which only increases when overclocking.)

well thanks I can compromise for a radeon hd 7850 and get a fx-6300 or unless anybody has other ideas for a $550 gaming pc.

Are you paying the power bill yourself? If yes, are more modern, less power-thirsty CPU might be a good investment.

Yea, it's slightly faster than the 750k at $80, so a good price there. But I think you can squeeze in a FX-6300.
