For anyone still running Dual or a Tri core, this would be a great time to ditch it, or if you just want a Black Edition proc.

Superbiiz is selling the OEM/Bare CPU for $79.99, USPS postage for my zip code shows $2.35 shipping.

If you'd rather do Newegg and get the full retail box, they are selling it for $84.99 shipped after promo code: EMCXVWL69

I'll be ditching my 830 for an unlocked chip to bring my FSB into reasonable areas.

I've got a Athlon X4 635 so maybe this will be a good upgrade for me. However, it might be better to just upgrade the whole system but that will have to be further down the road. Not sure.

Thank you, reallyscrued :)

No problem, and an upgrade from a Phenom II Quad is not yet really practical for the money unless you need a new RAM platform or you really need to be on the bleeding edge of technology IMO. There are very few games (if that's your thing) that benefit from the FX line. If you're crunching video all day or rendering graphics, then maybe you should invest in newer chip.

However, if you can crank the 965 to 4 Ghz, and you've been getting along fine with an Athlon X4, you'll probably be good to go for 2 years.

Aaand it seems that Amazon has just matched Newegg:

...I should have got it with them, 2 day Prime shipping. This pretty much makes it not a "Hot Deal" anymore since that seems to be the new going price.

These are great CPU's if you already have an AMD mobo. Not even sure the newer generation ones are faster unless you use CAD or Encode HD video. If your gaming there is little to gain by spending more.

This is not overclockable like the 965 BE but comparable, yes?
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
Locked multiplier on the 1055T. Increasing the FSB got my 125 watt version to six cores at 3.5 GHz, with 3 cores doing 4125 MHz Turbo on demand (with a voltage bump). Set all cores to idle ~1.1V at 1 GHz (heatpipe air cooler). Good performance for the $.

Regarding an earlier post, Microcenter only seems to be advertising AMD FX series cpu bundles (still some very good deals there, mostly in-store only).

Yeah I have the 965BE but haven't bothered overclocking it (currently just used as a media PC). This wouldn't be an upgrade worth buying but if you are in the market this looked like a good deal.

I compared the benchmarks of both in the benchmark section and they looked comparable with the 1055T showing a bit of extra speed (although without the 965 being overclocked). If you don't want to mess with overclocking, for the price, I would probably grab the 1055T if I was buying today.

I've got an Athlon II X4 635 and have done some comparisons using AnandTech's CPU Bench and I did not see a noticeable difference between the two processors. The benchmarks do not contain the latest games however so I'm not sure if the 1055T might do a lot better there.

I'm trying to keep this system for at least another year or so. If I change motherboards and go to a different platform, I would need a new OS and at that point I might as well get a new system altogether. That is why a CPU upgrade might be better, though I'm not sure if there would be a substantial performance increase.
