Had CPU unlocked and overclocked (240 "FSB") to 3.6GHz 1.44v CPU 2.4GHz CPU-NB 1.3v 2x2GB 960MHz RAM 1.65v (shitty OCZ 1066 stuff)

Gigabyte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H

Stupid video card is shitting the bed (see below)

Just for the heck of it I decided to revert the CPU back to stock settings, thinking it might be a part of the problem...or maybe somehow it would magically help me fix/solve the GPU problem.

It didnt, and actually it seems to have screwed up the CPU or something. Its no longer stable at stock settings (back to 3 core and all) even with extra voltage. Its got a mid range tower cooler keeping it at 21C idle and its never gone above 55C full load. I cant figure out what the heck is wrong now. Nothing I try, no combination of settings is working...I even went back to unlocked old OC settings and now Im getting blue screens random restarts and memory dumps and stuff. RAM sucks so I swapped it with a nicer set of GSkill 1600MHz which did nothing. The OCZ stuff seems to be perfectly fine at 1000MHz or less with 1.65v so I put it back in (Im back to bone stock settings).

Stupid video card is bad enough to where even sitting at windows you get driver crash errors (flashing screen) sometimes it locks up with black/grey screen. If doing anyting more than surfing the net the crash always results in a locked up computer. Ive tried underclocking (Im pretending it helped...though it really doesnt) putting new thermal paste on the cooler and tightening the screws more (used a small washer/spacer). Idles at 52C 100% fan (Antec 300 fully loaded with high speed fans too), no matter what program or stress test I use it wont go more than ~80% usage and tops out at like 80C. I think its the VRMs or something on the GPU that are dying, or something else...I dunno. GPU was never overclocked.

Anyway, the computer is now totally farked and Im scratching my head trying to figure out why and how to fix it. You cant go more than 5-10 minutes without a CPU or GPU crash (or program errors). Oh and yeah, I did try taking out the GPU and running the IGP when I started having the CPU issues...didnt help any. I dont have a spare GPU or MOBO I can test with this system. Maybe the MOBO wet itself...it looks physically fine and was working great before.

I always make sure to shut off and disconnect power before working on a system and making sure I am grounded to prevent any electrostatic shock. Ive built countless systems and this is one of the few thats been a PITA since the begining (GPU was brought over from another system, it worked great untill it went in this rig).

I have no idea what the heck, Im totally brain dead right now...Im tired and just want this thing running back the way it was. Was hoping this rant would give me a break...now I just want to take a nap. UHHHhhh-Ahhh *YAWN*

divide the problem in half. Fix the video card first.
Then run memTest for an hour on tests 5-7 (or maybe just 5-6 or 6-7 can't remember).
CPUs rarely if ever go bad.

Bad video cards will mess a system's stability up.

A cheap power supply can easily fry the entire computer, but without more system specs its impossible to even begin to guess.

Yeah, I'm wondering about the PSU too, since you seemed to have trouble even after reverting to stock clocks, with IGP.

Do you have a MC nearby? They do free PSU testing...

Other than that, yeah, I'd remove the GPU since it is known bad. If it really is that bad, it should be useless for gaming anyway...

Does the computer only crash inside windows? (not while booting?)

could be a borked windows installation with all the hard crashes you have been having with the video card.

I would also look into the PSU as others have said.

Modular Corsair 520w...computer seems to be running now on stock CPU settings only with +.1v to it. I also managed to get a nap in...so I havn't smashed the computer into tiny little bits. Rather busy with everything else right now, Ill have to get back to it eventually...but for now its mostly functional.

Thanks for all the input so far, I think Ive got another PSU I can try. And yeah computer seems to only crash in Windows. I gues it wouldnt hurt to format it again too (for like the 10th time lol).
