It is already well-known that one can unlock the fourth core of a triple core AMD Phenom II CPU. But during a test of the current ASRock A790GXH/128M motherboard at ocinside.de it was possible to unlock much more than this and that is a no April joke. The AMD Phenom II 710 X3 CPU became an Engineering Sample with four CPU cores, unlocked Vcore selection and unlocked multiplier ! All necessary BIOS settings for this modification are explained in the following AMD Phenom II unlock guide.

The next thing you know, someone's going to discover how to unlock the game of Tetris from the Phenom IIs.

I'm voting for a hidden copy of Prince of Persia myself.

edit: not to be too flippant in regards to the OP, so I must say that that is an interesting development that mostly invalidates any reason people might have for buying a 720BE unless they think the 720 is going to be a better overclocking due to binning.

Perhaps, except it doesn't appear to be stable. At the end of the article...

By the way, the multiplier and Vcore unlock was not possible with every run and holds just until switching of the PC, afterwards the previous explained steps were necessary again.

Hmm, that would be a hassle. However I am used to crap like that, at least when using my old Sempron which resets its BIOS settings every time I power it off, so I have to reset all the OC settings by hand every time I use it. The fact that it would not function every time is unfortunate, however.

720BE may still completely vw worth the money-- want to see if he can increase the L3 cache (CPU-NB) multiplier on that CPU. The setting is right below the actual cpu multiplier.

My L3's at 2.6ghz.

I prefer the Phenom II X2. Lots of success with unlocking the other two cores.

I have a similar mobo (AOD790GX/128M) and a 710. Will play with this and confirm. He's using an older BIOS though.

The "Engineering Sample" unlock doesn't seem to work on the Asrock AOD790GX/128M, with either 1.20 or 1.50 BIOS versions.

Could be, or perhaps this trick only works with that one specific motherboard/BIOS. For reference, my failed attempts were with a "known good" unlockable X3 710. If I ever get my hands on a A790GXH/128M, I'll test again.
