A Korean guy has put a new AMD Phenom II multi-core 65w CPU called the Phenom II 550BE thru some tests and it is looking like a new price performance leader will arrive the first week of June!

At stock speed and dual-core mode, it is more than competitive with like priced Intel chips, but it has the potential to clock to 4Ghz+ speed and go to multi-core processing.

Even in Intel favored benchmarks like 3DMark06, the multi-core Phenom II 550BE at 4Ghz+ blows past the I7 920, 940 and even 965 with a CPU score of 5960! If the rumored price of around $100-$110 is true, then AMD will sell more chips than Frito and Lays puts together.

It doesn't say what he needed to do to get it to 4ghz, and it doesn't say that it was Prime stable.

What is this chip by default, a dual core? It can be unlocked to a quad?

I'm skeptical for now, but if it indeed can be made into a 4ghz quad core for $100, then it will be one of the all time great CPUs.

1.5v is high for my Opteron 165, so I would imagine it's pretty staggering on modern tech.

Default on a 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 can be 1.35v or maybe more. 1.5v isn't that high.
AMD 45nm voltages seem to be quite a bit up on Intel ones.

It's getting pretty close. I wouldn't run my PhII over 1.5 for day-to-day work. Many people say not to go over 1.55v.

How is 3DMark06 an "Intel favored" benchmark?

Futuremark optimizes synthetic benchmark to Intel arch strongpoints, but other non synthetic benchmark like Sciencemark reveals true weak points.

Interesting you say that, considering 3DMark06 was developed before C2D, so therefore it must have been "optimized" for Netburst, which is a totally different architecture.

In fact, the highest performing CPU at that time was an AMD FX-60.

Is this a dualcore or a Quad, the first screenshot CPU-Z says 4 cores and the next it says 2....

Funny it looks like the 550 was unlocked. Koreans were first to unlock the 720 though. I'm still a bit skeptical.

Why is there no SM2/SM3 score?

And, video cards do have some effect on the CPU score. So it's disingenuous to compare setups that are too dissimilar.

Agreed. I got better scores in PCMark with a 955BE than with Q6600/Q9400 as well.

This looks like a PR stunt from AMD.

Lol some one in Korea gets hold of an AMD chip and does some overclocking and more and post results. How can u label this as PR stunt Directly from AMD.Its just like I and You buying any processor Intel or Amd and posting results on any forum. :)

Any ways more about this chips overclocking ability and 4th core unlock efforts here : http://www.xtremesystems.org/f...howthread.php?t=225727

Because it is a CPU score only? CPU scores are not influenced by the video card unless the card is doing physics.

Little confused forsome reason. So a 550 be at 4ghz is faster than A Nehalem at 4 ghz .

I don't believe that. If your talking stock speeds LOL . Nehalem do if ya find a good one at XS are 4.5- 5ghz on AIr .

If your overclocker 4 ghz PHII doesn't look so hot . Its only a 200mhz increase from befor. AMD is saved new price performance leader if you don't overclock the same value Intel processor Almost All penryns can Overclock well over 4ghz . So can't compare to Nehalem . I see ya want to believe . But it takes more than smoke and mirrors. Nice AMD can finally get to4ghz tho . Pretty late to that party.

Nemesis, show me an Intel quad core that costs less than $100 and can hit 4ghz using air cooling.

It's not intel favored as much as it is a totally worthless benchmark. In an article Xbit did, an overclocked Celeron had a very high 3DMark score, but the Celeron fell on its face when it came to actual gameplay. 3DMark is inaccurate because it doesn't rely on cache memory whereas real video games do.

I'll care about this chip when I see a real benchmark.

I get different CPU scores when running an 8800GT vs GTX260.

Are you talking stock? It's 3.1GHz stock. If you meant overclocking, the Phenom IIs can regularly reach 4GHz on air and, to prove it's not the CPU that's the limit here, 7GHz on LN2. Which is higher than Nehalem or Core can get to.

Well your proof goes against Whats known . I would like to see that 24/7 stable . Talk about after ya run prime all night or talk to hand.

The Cpu is the limit . After 3.8 GHz these things need absolute zero to O/C . Intel on the other hand with Nehalem only getting 5.e ghz . That terriable right . But On water you can get to %ghz on Nehalem .

Even tho 7ghz is neat cool wonderful . Its not 24/7 . The cost to run such a system is semi retarded and it has nothing to do with real world .

AMD Sub zero clocks 7 ghz .

Amd Water 4ghz AVERGE Differance 3 ghz

AMD Air 3.8 GHz Averge Differance . 3.2 ghz .

Intel Sub zero 5.3 Ghz DO stepping .

Intel water DO stepping Average 4.7 ghz Differance 600mhz

Intel DO air 4.5 ghz Average 4.5 ghz Differance 800mhz

Intel clearly has best silcon as they can get closer to Subzero GHZ on water and Air .

Intels differantical is 800/600mhz AMDs differantial is 3/3.3 ghz / Hugh differance . AMDs 7 ghz looks good But its nothing more than smoke and mirrors

Don't make me buy a 975 . LOL
