amd Phenom 9850 and what hsf ?

If it is AM2+ socket then hsfs that fit AM2+ will work. The OCZ Vendetta or Vendetta 2 would be good. Even the Cooler Master Hyper TX2 would probably be OK but I'm not sure if it fits the AM2+ (I doubt that the measurements of the socket are different from the regular AM2, just the pin layout or pin functions). Apparently that is correct as according to Wikipedia, the AM2+ processor will work in the AM2 socket mobo just the advanced features won't work.

i have a xigmatek hdt s1283, and i like it. if you have a top exhaust fan on your case, you may be able to run it passively without a crazy overclock.

No I don't think you can run a 125 W quad core cpu, passively!!!

That cpu needs the best air coolers available:

Thermalright Ultra 120
Xigmatek S1283 ( didn't seem that good)
Tuniq Tower
OCZ Vendetta 2
Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer
These all support socket AM2 and are very efficient .
