AMD or Intel

Hi all - I am wanting to build a PC. It's one and only duty would be to play games. I'm not wanting to spend a lot. My question is this...which platform would fit my needs the best? I've been looking at a VIA 266A based mobo teamed with a 1700XP. Would an Intel setup be better/cheaper?

The AMD system will be cheaper, if that's all you care about...

Intel probably wins on price/performance though since you can overclock the snot out of the Northwood P4s.

read some posts throughout AT and some reviews
beyond that it is mostly personal preference
the reality of the situation is that both platforms have strengths
personally i prefer AMD systems and am partial
but i do feel the price/performance ratio is definately in AMD's lap right now and has been for a long time
Ohh and athlons do overclock well, if you know what yur doing, nomatter what anyone says

Don't think about the processor itself in terms of AMD vs. Intel. Think of how much you are willing to spend on a specific CPU. Once you think of how much you are willing to spend, then the choices are easier to break down. If money is no object, its clear the most expensive processor will be.

In terms of reliability, performance, etc, you'll see arguements from both sides of the AMD/Intel war. I have six AMD processors at home and one Intel (mobile P4). All of which perform well, don't crash (when coupled with name brand motherboards) and haven't given me a single bit of grief.

Today, I am going SMP Athlon, I expect that to be a smooth transition as well.

Vash has a good statement, myself I have 2 AMD systems at home. If AMD doesn't come out with a faster TBred when I upgrade I'll make a move to Intel. I like to upgrade in small steps throughout the year. But I would get a different chipset instead of the KT266A, look into the KT333 if possible or if they are out yet the nForce 2. Look for features on the motherboard that you want and see if that'll help you choose between AMD or Intel.

i saw some info on the kt400 over at amdmb.com
gigabyte has apparently announced their kt400 solution already
maybe by next month we'll see a few kt400 boards out and some nforce2 solutions

Well, for $100 and below, definately AMD. The P4 Celeron 1.7 and 1.8's are totally bad, even a oc'ed P4 Celeron at 2.26GHz can't compete with the lower end XP's. Now if u're spending $130 or $150 on the CPU, then well there is always the option of ocing the 1.6A or 1.8A, which will when oc'ed to 533fsb topple the oither AMD offerings for the same price. So it really comes down to 1. whether you're spending $130 on a CPU and 2. To oc or not to oc.

I'd go for the XP if I were you. I just can't bear to recommend something based on the assumption that it will overclock. Overclocking should be a bonus, not an assumption.

intel is a tad more pricey.
but nevertheless u wont be disappointed in iether.
go with what u can afford.
