AMD or Intel

I am looking at building a new computer for college for under $1000. I decided that i wanted a dual core processor. I have been looking at the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ for ~ $350 at newegg. For about the same price, I could get the Intel Pentium D 930. I plan to do some gaming and also some multimedia editing. Which do you think is the best choice, or do you have any other processor you think would be better. I am open to any suggestions.

Forget about the 4200, it's a waste. A much better choice is the 3800. The 3800 will easily OC to meet the specs of the 4200 and more.

Defintely go for the AMD though. Only time it's worth going intel atm is if you're going super low end dual core where AMD doesn't have a comparable product(dollar wise).

4200+ will perform better than the 930 in every situation, and will also OC better. But like JPH said, if you are in to overclocking, get the X2 3800+ instead, and spend more on the video card.

Don't forget about the Intel price drops next week... the 3.4ghz P-D 950 will be down to $316.... might change the price/performance equation a little bit.

That won;t change the equation al all. The 3800 OC'ed can beat the pants off the 950 OC'ed.

Lets make it unanimous, X2 3800.

But which is faster without overclocking? I believe the 950 is actually a faster chip in that situation, plus it supports VT...

Here take a look for yourself with the Pentium D 950 benches vs the Athlon 64x2 3800+, I would say they are fairly competitive. The x2 3800+ doesn't really have a commanding lead unless your looking at perhaps POV Ray, 3D Studio Max Mental Ray, Mozilla 1.4, Mozilla & WME. There are also benches there that are favourable as well to the Pentium D 950. I qould say take a look at them before you decide.

That is something to consider, Virtualization Technology on the Pentium D.

Unless you're desperate then I'd wait a couple months. Conroe comes out in July and it'll do everything better. (higher performance, lower power, and lower cost)

Why? Do you think people are born with this knowledge? New person, same question. And there will be plenty more. You can tell them to use the search function, but that is borked most of the time anyways.

Nearly all X2 3800+ will be able to hit 2.4ghz, my boss at work got his one to 2.4ghz on an old Asus A8V board, and then u have a 4600+ for free.

Keys go back to the ATI Vs nVidia forum.

If you disagree with my comments, say so. Then tell me why. But telling me to go somewhere is the surest way to get me to stay. I'm rebellious like that.

So which is it for the OP? AMD or Intel?
