AMD Opteron outsold Intel Itanium by 10X

Isn't that a little like saying the P4 outsold the Opteron by 10x?

I mean they are pointed at different markets, aren't they? I thought the Xeon is the more direct Opteron competitor

The Itanimum is targeted at a different market than the Opteron, and as such, costs several times more. And its competing with real server chips from other companies. The opteron is aimed at the same market as the Xeon chips, as I understand it. Its easy to see why the opteron would outsell the Itanimum in that case. I'd be more interested in seeing how the Opteron sells compared the the Xeon chips.

There are more Xeons sold in 1 quater then how many opterons FAB 30 could make in one, and another reason is Dell.

Oh Grasshopper you make a fatal mistake.... When talking about Opterons

They targeted at people with more sense that saved more dollars.
