AMD Opteron Conference call transcript by ME!

You rock!

BTW, did anyone else find this statement ironic? "Endorsement of processors by Microsoft is great. Industry needs options to integrate seamlessly to the future."

No.
The "options" refers to Itanium and/or the fact that Opteron is spported by linux and Windows.

Opteron + only windows or only linux == death.

Does anyone else find it wierd to stop using the name hammer?

yeah it woulda sounded much better had they stuck with the code name Hammer instead of calling them Opteron or anything else for that matter
Hammer just sounds like something that will crush the Itanium and any Yamhil technology Intel has up their sleeves
ohh well

I really have to say that naming it Opteron was an extremely bad move on AMD's part. The name Hammer in itself would have generated much more praise.

wow thanks a very much appreciated post reddave can't wait to see how much this changes everything as we know it and what new software will take advantage also what will be possible in moving to 64 bit os (eh yeah i know but i can dream)

best post i've read in a long time

I think it really wont be much of a bigger deal than AMD releasing a new CPU architecture. We wont see much use out of the 64bit untill memory sizes get over 2GB. How ever as far as servers go this will be sweet. If there are any hardware veterans they could tell us how the 16->32b transition was...

I really am lookign forward to playing Q3 on a 64b machine...
Also, I wonder how long before there is gcc 64?

16 bit to 32 bit was great. Same old, hard push against the change, but eventually it caught on and Win95 was a godsend from the hell I call DOS/Windows 3.11

I even resisted the change to Windows 95, due to a lack of experience and knowledge on the subject at the time. Once I finally tried it, I loved it.

Although, yes it was a crashy, buggy mess. Still, it was worth the extra hassle I thought.
