I really hope this doesn't mean the end of CPU only desktop and server chips from AMD.

Hmm, could an Opteron Trinity APU feature a more powerful GPU component than mainstream desktop Trinity, more specialized for compute tasks? I would figure that a GCN-based APU would be better for that. Maybe AMD's trying to get their foot in the door before jumping to GCN.

If this is true, it appears AMD will be trumping Intel in time to market by nearly one year.

It was recently announced that Socket 2011 Ivy Bridge processors, the successors to Sandy Bridge-E, have been delayed until Q4 2013.

This makes sense because I don't think there is quite enough APU power / robust enough solution with what was just released with HD 4000. It finally supports OpenCL and DirectX 11, but OpenGL support is only at 3.2 still. OpenGL 4 support is only with the beta drivers.

I think the Haswell APU next year will have enough power and be mature enough to be competitive for an entry level workstation product.

I dont see anything in the article proving it tho.

However, with the AM3+ platform dying fast as it seems. It would be a natural progression.

Just like we got single socket Xeons with iGPUs for along time. Its a waste of money to do otherwise for the singlesocket.

Anand's stated at least once that Vishera is the last AM3+ processor. Many other sources have stated this as well.

I wonder if a 4 socket 384x4 shader apu cluster would be able to game.... Not that you'd want to game on something that costs $2500, but thats beside the point.
